Kidneys are responsible for removing waste and excess fluid from the body. They also help manage your body’s blood pressure. Kidney, or renal, disease occurs when the kidneys are damaged in some way. It may be chronic (slowly damaged over several years by diabetes or high blood pressure, for example), congenital (born with an abnormality that damages the kidneys, such as polycystic kidney disease), or acute (the kidneys suddenly fail in hours or a few days).
