OSSD Offers Recommendations to Basic Scientists on New NIH Research Policies

SWHR would like to congratulate several leading members of the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (OSSD) on the publication of their recent article “NIH initiative to balance sex of animals in preclinical studies: Generative questions to guide policy, implementation, and metrics” in our online, open access journal, the Biology of Sex Differences.

This paper identifies key questions of interest to basic scientists who wish to respond to the new NIH requirements to describe how the sex of their research material–cells and animals–will be balanced in their grant applications. It also lists some important resources to consider and strategies for monitoring the effectiveness of policies to improve the sex balance in research.

SWHR founded the OSSD and supported its efforts for six years prior to their launch as an independent organization in 2013. SWHR considers the OSSD one of its most significant achievements.
