SUMMARY:How Vaccines and Screening Can Prevent Cervical Cancer
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, there are more than 100 diagnostic tests and procedures available for detecting diseases and monitoring their progression. Diagnostic tools are also used to guide treatments and evaluate their effectiveness. Some tests are invasive\, such as a biopsy or endoscopy; whereas others are noninvasive\, such as x-rays and ultrasound imaging procedures. \nInnovations in diagnostics provide access to health information\, helping women make informed decisions about their health care at every stage of their lives. Screening and diagnostic testing can lead to earlier detection of disease\, improve health outcomes\, and contribute toward reducing health disparities among women. \nSWHR hosts a series of public forums to share educational information about the importance and value of innovative diagnostics throughout the lifespan and across disease states and conditions. SUMMARY:Diverse Voices Virtual Talk: Cancer in Women
DESCRIPTION:ORWH’s virtual speaker series titled “Diverse Voices: Intersectionality and the Health of Women” disseminates research findings that (1) are relevant to diverse groups of women and (2) incorporate a multidimensional sex-and-gender focus. The speaker series aims to increase public awareness\, understanding\, and engagement with research relevant to diverse populations of women; to highlight work by investigators receiving ORWH funding\, with ORWH affiliations\, and/or employing an intersectional or multidimensional framework. \nThe January 27\, 2022\, session of “Diverse Voices: Intersectionality and the Health of Women” will focus on cancer in women\, featuring presentations from Drs. Kemi Doll and Katie O’Brien. Dr. Doll will present on PCORI’s SISTER Study\, a randomized controlled trial that leverages two virtual evidence-based peer support interventions (one-on-one peer support and facilitated support groups) to improve outcomes for Black women with endometrial cancer. She will discuss the benefits of social support to adherence\, treatment completion\, and quality of life for women undergoing cancer treatment. Dr. O’Brien will present on NIEHS’ Sister Study\, which investigates environmental and genetic risk factors for breast cancer using a cohort of over 50\,000 women who have a sister with a breast cancer diagnosis. She will discuss recruitment strategies being used to enhance diversity within the cohort and new efforts by Sister Study investigators to better understand the role of race and ethnicity in cancer etiology. \nREGISTER
