SUMMARY:Coverage and Access Issues Affecting Women Living with Autoimmune Diseases
DESCRIPTION:The rate of autoimmune diseases and conditions in the United States is rising—and women are disproportionately affected. \nGenerally\, autoimmune diseases cannot be cured\, so treatment focuses on managing symptoms and slowing the progression and impacts of the disease. DESCRIPTION:June 2023 will mark the 30th anniversary of the NIH Revitalization Act of 1993\, a law which mandated the inclusion of women and minorities in all NIH-funded research. WHAM is excited to recognize the anniversary of this historic Act by hosting a series of virtual (and in-person) events throughout the year\, exploring what’s changed\, what hasn’t\, and where we need to go next.\n\nIn 1993\, Dr. Nanette Wenger’s seminal paper\, “Cardiovascular Health and Disease in Women” in the New England Journal of Medicine\, shook the medical community by highlighting the striking differences in women’s heart disease risks\, prognosis\, treatment and outcomes. SUMMARY:Taking it to Heart: Addressing Cardiovascular Disease in Women
DESCRIPTION:Diagnostic tests and procedures offer opportunities to detect diseases\, monitor disease progression\, guide treatments\, and evaluate treatment effectiveness. Some diagnostic tests are invasive\, such as a biopsy or endoscopy; whereas others are noninvasive\, such as x-rays and ultrasound imaging procedures. \nInnovations in diagnostics provide access to health information\, helping women make informed decisions about their health care at every stage of their lives. Screening and diagnostic testing can lead to earlier detection of disease\, improve health outcomes\, and contribute toward reducing health disparities among women. Research seeking to expand the development and availability of diagnostic tools for conditions that exclusively\, differently\, or disproportionately affect women is invaluable in furthering women’s health across sectors. \nSWHR is hosting a series of public forums to share educational information about the importance and value of innovative diagnostics throughout the lifespan and across disease states and conditions. SUMMARY:PRGLAC Then and Now: Where We Are and Where We're Going
DESCRIPTION:The 21st Century Cures Act established the Task Force on Research Specific to Pregnant Women and Lactating Women (PRGLAC) to advise the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services regarding gaps in knowledge and research on safe and effective therapies for pregnant women and lactating women. The Task Force’s work culminated in a set of recommendations based on information gleaned during four open meetings and a public comment period. The central theme of those recommendations was “the need to alter cultural assumptions that have significantly limited scientific knowledge of therapeutic product safety\, effectiveness\, and dosing for pregnant and lactating women.” \nDuring this congressional briefing and national webinar\, designed specifically for—but not limited to—members of the 118th Congress\, panelists reviewed the state of PRGLAC\, the PRGLAC recommendations and their implementation status\, the current legislative and regulatory landscape\, and review actions that can be taken at the federal level to increase representation of these populations in clinical trials. \n*This event is widely attended and relevant to official duties. \nThis event is part of a series about the inclusion of pregnant and lactating peoples in research. And Dr. Sheryl Kingsberg\, this event’s esteemed speaker\, is the one to learn from. A professor\, prolific researcher and writer\, Dr. Kingsberg’s vast areas of expertise include menopause\, female sexual disorders\, and the genitourinary syndrome of menopause. Dr. Kingsberg will help attendees understand why your vaginas may be dry\, sex painful\, your libidos shot\, and your orgasms diminished\, as well as what you can do to put at least some of the Va back in your Voom. \n\nDr. Sheryl Kingsberg is the chief of the division of behavioral medicine at MacDonald Women’s Hospital/University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Professor in Reproductive Biology\, Urology and Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University. Her areas of clinical specialization include female sexual disorders\, menopause\, pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders\, and psychological aspects of infertility. \nDr. Kingsberg’s primary research interests are in treatments for female sexual disorders and genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). She is an Associate Editor for Sexual Medicine Reviews and sits on the editorial boards of the journals Menopause and Climacteric. She has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters and has co-edited a multidisciplinary textbook on treating female sexual disorders. \nDr. Kingsberg is a past president of The North American Menopause Society and The International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health. For more information about our panel event\, Black Mental Health: “Let’s Talk About It” please scroll down. \nBlack / African American Mental Health 101: \nSince the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic\, within the Bay Area there has been an increase in reported cases of mental illness in Black / African American Communities. \nBlack / African Americans face the unique struggles of ancestral trauma\, institutionalized racism\, violence\, and mass trauma from the pandemic\, along with racial and cultural insensitivity within the medical community. Stigma remains one of the greatest barriers to treatment. ​ \nThis presentation speaks specifically to the unique challenges and experiences of Black and African American individuals who live with mental health conditions. \nIn this presentation\, learn about contributing factors\, generational trauma\, coping strategies\, local resources and supports\, and how volunteer speakers (peers) manage their conditions.
