This provisional committee was formed to support a new consensus study focused on examining the current state of biomedical research aimed at preventing and treating Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) and identifying research priorities and opportunities to catalyze advances across the field. During this public session\, representatives from the study’s sponsor\, the National Institutes of Health\, will provide their perspectives on the statement of task and present an overview of current strategic planning efforts for NIH-funded AD/ADRD research. DESCRIPTION:While vaccines remain the best protection against severe illness from COVID-19 and have helped reduce the number of infections and deaths from the virus\, the recent uptick in cases and concerns about an increase this fall highlight the fact that COVID-19 is not gone\, and millions of Americans continue to face a higher risk of severe illness from the virus. \nIn addition to being up to date on vaccinations\, antivirals are an important and effective tool to reduce the severity of symptoms and the risk of hospitalization for those at greatest risk of serious illness. Yet\, despite the positive strides made since the start of the pandemic to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 and the availability of treatment options\, public awareness and timely access to antiviral treatments remain a challenge for many\, particularly among some of the most vulnerable populations. \nJoin the COVID-19 Education and Equity Project and our partners for an engaging discussion focused on raising awareness about antiviral treatments as a critical tool in the battle against COVID-19. SUMMARY:The Role of Federal Agencies in Supporting Women’s Bone Health Early and Often: A Policy Imperative
DESCRIPTION:  \nBone health is important for overall health. Bones protect the body’s organs from injury as well as store and release the body’s supply of calcium. \nBone fractures can lead to decreased mobility\, physical function\, independence\, and quality of life – and they are costly. The estimated national cost of osteoporosis\, the most common form of bone disease\, and related fractures is $22 billion\, and that number is expected to rise by more than $95 billion by 2040. \nThe U.S. government—through its programs and initiatives—has an important role to play in promoting the nation’s bone health and taking steps to improve bone health outcomes. This ranges from investing in federal research on bone health to conducting public health education and awareness campaigns about how Americans can maintain their bone health over the lifespan. \nThis October\, as part of Bone and Joint Health Awareness Month\, the Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) hosted a national webinar and congressional briefing about how federal agencies are contributing to improved bone health and health care for women across the lifespan and why investments in these programs and initiatives should continue to be prioritized. \n\n  \nFollow the conversation on Twitter at @SWHR and #SWHRtalksBoneHealth. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
