Although research has documented sex differences in heart health and disease\, insufficient attention to the study of sex\, gender\, and hormones in cardiovascular research and a lack of inclusion of women in clinical studies have perpetuated disparities in women’s heart health. Moreover\, data is often not stratified to understand impacts for diverse subpopulations of women. This session will discuss advances\, challenges\, and opportunities to address cardiovascular disease in women – from the lab to legislation – with insights that can be translated for implementation across the globe.  \nAgenda \n12:10 – 12:35 p.m.: Lunch  \n12:35 – 12:50 p.m.: Spotlighting Gaps & Opportunities to Improve Women’s Heart Health\, presented by Irene O. Aninye\, PhD\, Chief Science Officer\, Society for Women’s Health Research  \n One way that the SWHR has worked to advance cardiovascular research and care for women is by convening experts across disciplines and sectors to survey the scientific landscape and propose research questions\, clinical strategies\, and policy solutions to address key gaps in the field. This presentation will walk through actions that SWHR has taken to address disparities in women’s heart heath and highlight persistent gaps that still need national and global attention. As women’s health cannot advance without engaging health care advocacy and policy stakeholders\, this session will also discuss the central roles that scientists play in advocacy efforts\, providing examples of how their involvement has promoted legislative change in the women’s heart health space in the United States.  \n12:50 – 1:05 p.m.: Intersecting Realities Concerning Heart Health and Intersectionality\, presented by Syreen Goulmamine\, MPH\, Science Programs Manager\, Society for Women’s Health Research  \n Effective public health research acknowledges the complex interplay of various social determinants of health that shape an individual’s risk factors\, experiences\, and health outcomes. When studying women’s heart health and disease\, researchers must consider how women exist within multiple social categories simultaneously\, and how these intersecting identities can result in unique health challenges and disparities. Factors such as race\, ethnicity\, gender\, socioeconomic status\, access to healthcare\, and environmental conditions can all play significant roles in shaping a woman’s risk of developing heart disease and her ability to access timely and appropriate care. DESCRIPTION:The Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) is dedicated to promoting research on biological sex differences and increasing awareness of health conditions and diseases that disproportionately\, differently\, or exclusively affect women. Sex and gender influences in autoimmune disorders are undeniable\, with women representing more than 80% of the 23.5 million individuals in the United States living with autoimmune diseases. SWHR has taken on the charge to address persistent gaps in research\, health care\, and policies that could improve the lives of women living with these chronic inflammatory conditions. \nThis symposium discusses the impacts of autoimmune diseases on women’s health across the lifespan\, with special emphasis on pregnancy and maternal health\, caregiving/parenting children with autoimmune disease\, and the menopause transition. Panelists present strategies as to how research\, clinical\, and policy stakeholders can collaborate to address persistent research gaps\, disparities\, and unmet needs in autoimmune disease care. Registration for this conversation must be completely separately and is free. \n  \nAbout VCU Institute for Women’s Health \nThe VCU Institute for Women’s Health (IWH) is a chartered university-wide institute approved by the Board of Visitors in 1999. It is the only community of scholars across VCU that conducts\, promotes\, and integrates interdisciplinary research\, education\, and community engagement in women’s health and sex/ gender differences. As the central coordinating entity for women’s health at VCU\, IWH has been instrumental in identifying new and emerging opportunities and influencing institutional priorities related to women’s health.   \nSince its establishment\, IWH has achieved major accomplishments in the areas of research\, education\, and community engagement and has increased the University’s visibility as a national leader in women’s health. In 2003\, the Institute was designated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health as one of 20 National Centers of Excellence in Women’s Health. DESCRIPTION:“The Future Directions in Menopause Research: Optimizing Midlife Health of Women Roundtable” is the launch event for NIH’s Women’s Health Roundtable Series on important women’s health topics as part of the White House Women’s Health Research Initiative. This series was developed as a recommended action in response to the Presidential Memorandum to bring attention to priority topics within the Department of Health and Human Services and disseminate information on federally supported research areas. The roundtable series will be led by NIH institute\, center\, and office leadership and will engage the research community and the public to bring greater awareness to female-specific health conditions (e.g.\, menopause and endometriosis)\, as well as diseases and conditions that predominantly affect women (e.g.\, autoimmune diseases)\, and present or progress differently in women (e.g.\, heart disease\, Alzheimer’s disease\, etc.). \nThis launch event will be hosted by the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) and the Office of Disease Prevention (ODP). This roundtable aims to inform and spark dialogue around the science on menopause and highlight NIH-supported work in the menopausal research domain. DESCRIPTION:In observance of National Women’s Health Week (NWHW) 2024 and National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention month\, the FDA Office of Women’s Health (OWH)\, will host a free virtual public webinar titled: Osteoporosis: A perspective for 2024 presented by Marcella Donovan Walker\, MD\, MS. \nStrong bones are essential to health and quality of life. Osteoporosis and fragility fractures are common and can be debilitating but there are steps that can be taken to help reduce the risk. Because osteoporosis is asymptomatic until the first clinical fracture\, many women do not realize they are at risk. This lecture will summarize the current approach to assessing bone health\, as well as preventing and treating osteoporosis with a focus on postmenopausal women. \nThe webinar offers continuing education (CME/CNE/CPE) credits and will be held virtually on the Zoom platform.
