SUMMARY:Understanding Women’s Vision Health Across the Lifespan
DESCRIPTION:The Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) convened an interdisciplinary group of researchers\, clinicians\, and other relevant stakeholders for a closed roundtable meeting on women’s vision health. The purpose was to identify the unmet needs and knowledge gaps in research\, treatment\, and disease awareness and identification. \nEvidence shows the majority of ocular diseases affect women disproportionately compared to men. In the United States\, the majority of the 4.4 million Americans age 40 and older who are visually impaired or blind are female. More women are at risk for eye diseases such as cataracts\, glaucoma\, and macular degeneration. Thyroid eye disease\, an autoimmune condition\, is almost five times more common in women than in men. More than 3 million women have dry eye\, which is more common after menopause. \nDespite these alarming statistics\, the root causes of ocular diseases risk are not well understood and a focused research agenda is greatly needed to develop and implement comprehensive diagnostic\, preventive\, and treatment strategies to address disparities in women’s eye health.

SUMMARY:Confronting Inequality in America: Beyond COVID-19: Closing the Racial Health Gap
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 29\, POLITICO Live is convening physicians\, advocates and policymakers for its second town hall in the Confronting Inequality in America series to discuss the policy and public health solutions needed to solve the inequalities in the US health care system that have a disproportionate impact on Black and other patients of color. \nThe coronavirus pandemic has laid bare these health inequities with African American and Latino patients being hospitalized or dying from Covid-19 at higher rates. Before the pandemic\, Blacks and Latinos already faced a number of obstacles in receiving primary and preventive care\, which is tied to a number of factors such as poverty\, educational attainment and structural discrimination in the health care system. \nThis town hall\, Beyond COVID-19: Closing the Racial Health Gap\, will also address implicit bias in health care\, Black maternal mortality rates and the lack of Black doctors and its impact in the quality of care that Black patients receive.
