SUMMARY:SWHR Policy Advisory Council Meeting
DESCRIPTION:SWHR’s Policy Advisory Council will meet for its quarterly closed-door meeting. The Policy Advisory Council is a forum for industry\, nonprofit\, and other health care stakeholders to partner with SWHR to support emerging scientific research and public policy that will improve women’s health. Council members will have an opportunity to work collaboratively to develop policy positions\, promote research\, and create materials designed benefit women’s health. \nLearn More \n

SUMMARY:Assessing Research Gaps and Unmet Needs in Uterine Fibroids
DESCRIPTION:The stigmatization of menstrual issues has resulted in a lack of scientific innovation and public awareness for gynecological conditions such as uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that grow in and around the uterus and cause symptoms like heavy bleeding\, pelvic pain\, bloating\, urinary problems\, painful sex\, and back pain. \nAbout 26 million American women suffer from uterine fibroids\, and some of them experience severe and disabling symptoms\, leading to anemia\, urinary tract infections\, or kidney damage. Fibroids can also affect a woman’s fertility and are linked to some pregnancy complications. \nDespite the prevalence and significant impact of fibroids\, public awareness about the condition is extremely low. SWHR’s Endometriosis and Fibroids Network is working to engage and educate patients\, clinicians\, and health care decision-makers about the burden of these diseases. \n\nAs part of this work\, SWHR convened a diverse group of researchers\, clinicians\, and patients for a closed-door virtual roundtable meeting to discuss the gaps in research\, clinical practice\, policy\, and patient education that need to be filled to improve health outcomes for women with fibroids.

SUMMARY:Focus on Fibroids: What Do Women Need for Better Care?
DESCRIPTION:The Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) hosted a virtual panel discussion to raise awareness about research gaps and unmet needs related to diagnosis\, treatment\, and access to care for uterine fibroids. \nUterine fibroids are a significant public health issue affecting about 26 million American women\, with Black women at increased risk for the disease compared to white women. Fibroids are benign tumors that grow in and around the uterus\, and they can cause symptoms such as heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding and pelvic pressure or pain. \nPanelists shared their insights on how to improve the health of women with fibroids by driving innovation in research\, clinical care\, policymaking\, and education for this often overlooked\, underfunded\, and stigmatized disease. \nThis panel is part of the work of SWHR’s Endometriosis and Fibroids Network\, which seeks to engage and educate patients\, clinicians\, and health care decision-makers about the burden of these diseases\, which significantly impact the lives of the women.
