SUMMARY:On My Heart: Women Share Personal Journeys with Heart Disease
DESCRIPTION:  \nHeart disease is the leading cause of death for women (and men) in the United States\, accounting for nearly 500\,000 deaths in U.S. women each year. Despite its impact\, a significant number of women are not aware that cardiovascular disease is a major health risk. \nDuring this joint webinar hosted by the Society for Women’s Heart Research and WomenHeart\, hear from women about their personal journeys with heart disease\, including what their diagnosis and treatment journeys have entailed\, how they are managing their health today\, and what they wished they knew earlier. \nFollow the conversation on Twitter at @SWHR and #SWHRtalksHeart. \n\nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Efforts to Advance Menopause in the UK: A Conversation with the House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee
DESCRIPTION:In July 2022\, the UK Parliament House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee published the report “Menopause and the Workplace” to examine “the extent of discrimination faced by menopausal people in the workplace” and to investigate how “Government policy and workplace practices can better support those experiencing menopause.” The report explored the areas\, including stigma around menopause\, current laws\, and how menopause is affecting women in the workplace\, and provided a set of recommendations to the government. \nDuring this conversation\, the Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) spoke with two members of the House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee about what inspired this report\, what they discovered\, how the government responded to their report\, and whether there were any lessons learned that could be applied to other countries\, including the United States. \nJoin SWHR for this unique conversation to hear how other countries are addressing menopause and how they’re seeking to change the culture around this natural life stage. \n  \n\nFollow the conversation on Twitter at @SWHR and #SWHRtalksMenopause. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:The Role of Federal Agencies in Supporting Women’s Bone Health Early and Often: A Policy Imperative
DESCRIPTION:  \nBone health is important for overall health. Bones protect the body’s organs from injury as well as store and release the body’s supply of calcium. \nBone fractures can lead to decreased mobility\, physical function\, independence\, and quality of life – and they are costly. The estimated national cost of osteoporosis\, the most common form of bone disease\, and related fractures is $22 billion\, and that number is expected to rise by more than $95 billion by 2040. \nThe U.S. government—through its programs and initiatives—has an important role to play in promoting the nation’s bone health and taking steps to improve bone health outcomes. This ranges from investing in federal research on bone health to conducting public health education and awareness campaigns about how Americans can maintain their bone health over the lifespan. \nThis October\, as part of Bone and Joint Health Awareness Month\, the Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) hosted a national webinar and congressional briefing about how federal agencies are contributing to improved bone health and health care for women across the lifespan and why investments in these programs and initiatives should continue to be prioritized. \n\n  \nFollow the conversation on Twitter at @SWHR and #SWHRtalksBoneHealth. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
