SUMMARY:Opportunities in Women's Health: A Fireside Chat Congressional Briefing with ORWH Director Clayton
DESCRIPTION:With the November 2023 announcement about the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research\, there is a renewed buzz around the opportunities to advance the health of women across the lifespan. During this exclusive conversation with Janine Clayton\, MD\, FARVO\, Associate Director for Research on Women’s Health and Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH)\, Dr. Clayton provides her insights into the current challenges and opportunities within women’s health. This event also tees up Women’s Health Research Day\, which occurs annually on January 25. Women’s Health Research Day marks the implementation of the NIH Sex as a Biological Variable Policy\, which outlines NIH’s expectation that sex as a biological variable will be factored into research designs\, analyses\, and reporting. During this event\, the Friends of ORWH ask Dr. Clayton how we can better integrate SABV across the U.S. research enterprise. \nThis event is hosted by the Friends of the Office of Research on Women’s Health (FORWH). \n*This event is widely attended and relevant to official duties.

SUMMARY:Elevating Endometriosis to a Public Health Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological disease that affects more than 200 million women worldwide. When endometrial-like tissue grows outside of the uterus\, the lesions that form on other organs throughout the body can cause severe pelvic and back pain\, as well as pain between periods and with intercourse\, heavy menstrual bleeding\, and infertility. In fact\, 1 in 10 women have endometriosis and 30-50% of individuals with endometriosis experience infertility.  \nAlthough endometriosis can begin in adolescence\, it often goes undetected and inadequately treated for a significant period of time. Usually diagnosed in a woman’s 30s or 40s\, this journey can be delayed an average of up to 6.7 years due to dismissing symptoms and societal stigma surrounding menstruation and gynecological health. Moreover\, because there is no cure for endometriosis\, it is critical that women are engaged and empowered throughout their journey with this chronic disease and supported in living a high quality of life.  \nSWHR hosted a virtual public forum to discuss the impact of endometriosis on women’s health and to highlight persistent gaps in diagnosis and treatment. \n
