SUMMARY:Up to Our Neck in Autoimmune Thyroid Disease: A Lifespan Look at Women’s Health
DESCRIPTION:Autoimmune diseases affect more than 24 million Americans\, 80% of which are women. They are among the leading causes of death for young and middle-aged women and contribute significantly to increased medical and economic costs and reduced quality of life. In particular\, autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) are among the most common autoimmune diseases with more than 85% of cases occurring in women. There are several variants of AITD with the most common types being Graves’ disease (hyperthyroidism) and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (hypothyroidism). Patients with AITD are also often diagnosed with other autoimmune diseases and comorbid conditions. \nAs with other autoimmune diseases\, AITD may be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors and can impact individuals throughout their lifespan. AITD may develop and be diagnosed during adolescence\, pregnancy\, or post menopause. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of AITDs are imperative to reducing potential physical and cognitive delays in childhood\, adverse pregnancy outcomes\, associated health problems\, and reduced quality of life. \nThe Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) hosted a webinar to discuss autoimmune thyroid diseases\, highlighting the risks and impacts of AITD on women’s health\, the breadth of experiences for women living with AITD across the lifespan\, and innovations in diagnostics and treatment.

SUMMARY:Insights into the Intersection of Cardiovascular Disease and Maternal Morbidity and Mortality
DESCRIPTION:Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the United States\, as it is a major risk factor for severe maternal morbidity (SMM). SMM affects approximately 60\,000 women in the United States annually\, and rates have been increasing with the changing demographics of the maternal population\, and significantly affecting racial and ethnic disparities among pregnant populations. Patients with CVD plus pre-existing chronic health conditions are at an increased risk of maternal morbidity and mortality. Thus\, prompt diagnosis and treatment of CVD are imperative to reducing the potential adverse pregnancy outcomes. Preconception screening and counseling\, as well as continued monitoring during pregnancy and postpartum can help recognize and mitigate cardiovascular-related maternal morbidity and mortality. \nSWHR hosted a fireside chat to discuss the risks and impact of CVD on maternal morbidity and mortality and highlight the importance of screenings and follow-up care that address personalized needs of pregnant patients to improve overall health for all women. \nThis event happened live during the NPWH 27th Annual Premier Women’s Healthcare Conference\, broadcasted via Zoom webinar.
