SUMMARY:Up to Our Neck in Autoimmune Thyroid Disease: A Lifespan Look at Women’s Health
DESCRIPTION:Autoimmune diseases affect more than 24 million Americans\, 80% of which are women. They are among the leading causes of death for young and middle-aged women and contribute significantly to increased medical and economic costs and reduced quality of life. In particular\, autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) are among the most common autoimmune diseases with more than 85% of cases occurring in women. There are several variants of AITD with the most common types being Graves’ disease (hyperthyroidism) and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (hypothyroidism). Patients with AITD are also often diagnosed with other autoimmune diseases and comorbid conditions. \nAs with other autoimmune diseases\, AITD may be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors and can impact individuals throughout their lifespan. AITD may develop and be diagnosed during adolescence\, pregnancy\, or post menopause. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of AITDs are imperative to reducing potential physical and cognitive delays in childhood\, adverse pregnancy outcomes\, associated health problems\, and reduced quality of life. \nThe Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) hosted a webinar to discuss autoimmune thyroid diseases\, highlighting the risks and impacts of AITD on women’s health\, the breadth of experiences for women living with AITD across the lifespan\, and innovations in diagnostics and treatment.

SUMMARY:NIH Women's Health Roundtable: Maternal Mental Health Research
DESCRIPTION:Elevating Women’s Voices to Improve Maternal Mental Health is the third event in the NIH Women’s Health Roundtable Series \, which focuses on important women’s health topics\, such as maternal mental health\, as part of the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research . This series was developed as a recommended action in response to the Presidential Memorandum  to bring attention to priority topics within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and to disseminate information on federally supported research areas. \nThe roundtable is also featured in the National Institute of Mental Health’s (NIMH) Office of Disparities Research and Workforce Diversity Webinar Series\, which focuses on mental health equity research topics. The event is co-hosted by the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH)  and NIMH. \nThe goals of this roundtable are to: \n\nSpotlight high-priority research areas related to women’s mental health during pregnancy and the postpartum period\, up to one year following childbirth.\nShare information on how NIMH-supported research advances the development of and access to screening\, diagnostics\, and preventive and treatment interventions to improve women’s mental health during the perinatal period.\nExplain how maternal mental health research can reduce the burden of mental illnesses that contribute to maternal morbidity and mortality.\nIdentify and explore gaps in areas critical to women’s research outlined within the Executive Order on Advancing Women’s Health Research and Innovation (EO 14120)  and the 2024-2028 NIH-Wide Strategic Plan for Research on the Health of Women.\n\nThis webinar is free\, but registration is required. \nLearn More

SUMMARY:The women’s health gap: Why sex matters in research
DESCRIPTION:Around the globe\, the gender gap stubbornly persists in many aspects of life\, from work compensation to health care. Due to outdated policies that limited female participants in clinical trials\, among other factors\, much of modern medicine is built on research performed exclusively on male bodies. At the same time\, conditions that exclusively impact women\, such as premenstrual syndrome\, endometriosis\, and polycystic ovary syndrome\, are routinely stigmatized and understudied. In recent years\, it’s become clear that cardiovascular disease\, neurological disorders\, and autoimmune disease affect women differently or disproportionately\, highlighting the need for sex- and gender-specific approaches. \nWomen’s health encompasses unique challenges that require specialized attention and research. Despite advancements in medicine\, significant gaps remain in understanding how diseases affect women differently than men. In this Science webinar\, a panel of experts comprising researchers\, clinicians\, and industry innovators will explore the unique health challenges that women face and the crucial role of sex-specific research in driving medical innovation. Don’t miss this opportunity to stay at the forefront of women’s health research and innovation. Join the hosts and be part of the conversation that is shaping the future of women’s health. \nWebinar participants will: \n\nExplore advancements in reproductive medicine\, including the use of AI\, and why this is not just a women’s issue\nHear the latest research findings on sex differences and brain health\nLearn about the journey from research to real-world applications\, focusing on how new discoveries in women’s health are translated into practical\, marketable medical products and treatments\nAsk the speakers questions during the live broadcast.\n\nLearn More

SUMMARY:Insights into the Intersection of Cardiovascular Disease and Maternal Morbidity and Mortality
DESCRIPTION:Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the United States\, as it is a major risk factor for severe maternal morbidity (SMM). SMM affects approximately 60\,000 women in the United States annually\, and rates have been increasing with the changing demographics of the maternal population\, and significantly affecting racial and ethnic disparities among pregnant populations. Patients with CVD plus pre-existing chronic health conditions are at an increased risk of maternal morbidity and mortality. Thus\, prompt diagnosis and treatment of CVD are imperative to reducing the potential adverse pregnancy outcomes. Preconception screening and counseling\, as well as continued monitoring during pregnancy and postpartum can help recognize and mitigate cardiovascular-related maternal morbidity and mortality. \nSWHR hosted a fireside chat to discuss the risks and impact of CVD on maternal morbidity and mortality and highlight the importance of screenings and follow-up care that address personalized needs of pregnant patients to improve overall health for all women. \nThis event happened live during the NPWH 27th Annual Premier Women’s Healthcare Conference\, broadcasted via Zoom webinar.
