SUMMARY:Understanding Women’s Vision Health Across the Lifespan
DESCRIPTION:The Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) convened an interdisciplinary group of researchers\, clinicians\, and other relevant stakeholders for a closed roundtable meeting on women’s vision health. The purpose was to identify the unmet needs and knowledge gaps in research\, treatment\, and disease awareness and identification. \nEvidence shows the majority of ocular diseases affect women disproportionately compared to men. In the United States\, the majority of the 4.4 million Americans age 40 and older who are visually impaired or blind are female. More women are at risk for eye diseases such as cataracts\, glaucoma\, and macular degeneration. Thyroid eye disease\, an autoimmune condition\, is almost five times more common in women than in men. More than 3 million women have dry eye\, which is more common after menopause. \nDespite these alarming statistics\, the root causes of ocular diseases risk are not well understood and a focused research agenda is greatly needed to develop and implement comprehensive diagnostic\, preventive\, and treatment strategies to address disparities in women’s eye health.

SUMMARY:2020 Scientific Congress of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine
DESCRIPTION:The theme of the 2020 Scientific Congress of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine is “Dynamic Collaborations in Reproductive Medicine.” The scope of reproductive medicine is broad ranging from puberty to menopause\, including all genders\, while having a focus that is both molecular and macroscopic. Dynamic collaborations between differing reproductive medicine teams for the resolution of infertility or fertility preservation of patients will be explored at this Congress. The program is balanced between science at the cellular level and application of dynamic collaborations in using cutting edge information in the clinical care of patients to promote positive outcomes for families. This live program is designed for physicians\, nurses\, andrology and embryology laboratory personnel\, genetic counselors\, social workers\, practice and laboratory managers\, as well as specialists in mental health\, law\, and ethics to advance exemplary medical care and disseminate cutting-edge research. These goals will be addressed by a wide array of educational activities. \nLooking forward to better times\, and in the hope that in the months ahead\, the COVID-19 situation will have subsided\, ASRM is continuing to plan for its annual Scientific Congress & Expo to be held this year in Portland\, Oregon.

SUMMARY:Confronting Inequality in America: Beyond COVID-19: Closing the Racial Health Gap
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 29\, POLITICO Live is convening physicians\, advocates and policymakers for its second town hall in the Confronting Inequality in America series to discuss the policy and public health solutions needed to solve the inequalities in the US health care system that have a disproportionate impact on Black and other patients of color. \nThe coronavirus pandemic has laid bare these health inequities with African American and Latino patients being hospitalized or dying from Covid-19 at higher rates. Before the pandemic\, Blacks and Latinos already faced a number of obstacles in receiving primary and preventive care\, which is tied to a number of factors such as poverty\, educational attainment and structural discrimination in the health care system. \nThis town hall\, Beyond COVID-19: Closing the Racial Health Gap\, will also address implicit bias in health care\, Black maternal mortality rates and the lack of Black doctors and its impact in the quality of care that Black patients receive. Learn more about the event and panelists here. \nRegister
