SUMMARY:Exploring the Impact of Menopause on Women's Health
DESCRIPTION:Each day\, about 6\,000 American women reach menopause\, the biological process defined as the final menstrual period\, marking the end of menstruation and fertility. This transition typically occurs when women are in their 40s or 50s and is characterized by a significant decrease in estrogen. \nThis estrogen depletion can cause vasomotor symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats as well as genital and urinary symptoms. These symptoms can last several years for some women\, drastically affecting their quality of life. Women also have increased risks of other health conditions following menopause\, such as cardiovascular disease\, cognitive decline\, osteoporosis\, skin issues\, and insomnia. For example\, the drop in estrogen associated with menopause has a direct relationship with the development of osteoporosis. \nDespite the vast number of women affected by these menopause-related symptoms and health issues\, treatment options — especially non-hormonal ones — remain few. Increased education is also greatly needed for both patients and clinicians to promote awareness of symptom management as well as the increased health risks associated with menopause. To explore these issues further\, SWHR is convening a diverse\, interdisciplinary group of basic and clinical researchers\, health care providers\, patients/patient advocates\, and thought leaders for a closed roundtable meeting to discuss the impact of menopause on women’s health.

SUMMARY:Don't Sweat Menopause: How to Improve Care for Women
DESCRIPTION:Each day\, thousands of American women reach menopause\, when their menstrual cycles permanently cease. The natural menopausal transition leading up to this point typically occurs when women are in their 40s or 50s. However\, some women will experience menopause earlier in life after undergoing surgery to remove their ovaries to address health conditions such as endometriosis. \nMenopause is associated with vasomotor symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats as well as genital and urinary symptoms. These symptoms can last several years for some women\, drastically affecting their quality of life. Women also have increased risk for other health conditions following menopause\, such as cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. \nThis SWHR webinar provides information about menopause for women and their health care providers as well as examines ways that we can individually and collectively improve the quality of life for women at this life stage. \nFor more information on menopause treatment options\, check out this FDA fact sheet. To learn more about compounded bioidentical hormone therapy\, view guidance from the Endocrine Society and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. \nThis webinar is a follow-up to SWHR’s expert roundtable on menopause in January 2021 that sought to identify gaps in research\, clinical practice\, policy\, and education.

SUMMARY:Sex and Gender Disparities in the COVID-19 Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:The NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) is launching a virtual speaker series titled Diverse Voices: COVID-19\, Intersectionality\, and the Health of Women\, to disseminate key COVID-19 research findings that (1) are relevant to diverse groups of women and (2) incorporate a multidimensional sex-and-gender focus. The speaker series also aims to increase public awareness\, understanding\, and engagement with COVID-19 research. Each session of the series will include the author(s) of a paper relevant to the health of women; in plain language\, speakers will present specific takeaways from their publication for researchers\, clinicians\, and the public. The goal of the speaker series is both to amplify research relevant to the health of women and to support informed decisions about therapeutic or vaccine trial and other research participation by diverse women. \nThe inaugural session will take place January 27\, 2021\, at 11:00 a.m. EST and will feature Dr. Ana Langer and Dr. Jewel Gausman\, who will discuss their commentary piece titled “Sex and Gender Disparities in the COVID-19 Pandemic .” \nRegister
