SUMMARY:Women’s Health Research: Understanding the Roles of Sex and Gender
DESCRIPTION:A growing body of research shows that sex and gender differences influence our health across the lifespan. The COVID-19 pandemic provides a clear example of why we must consider both sex and gender in research. Men are more likely than women to die from the virus\, while women seem more likely to suffer long-term side effects. \nThe Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) and the Endocrine Society hosted a virtual congressional briefing to discuss the importance of including sex as a biological variable (SABV) in research\, provide an update on National Institutes of Health (NIH) 2016 SABV policy and how the field has changed in the past five years\, and offer recommendations for overcoming barriers to the inclusion of SABV in research\, ensuring better health care for all.

SUMMARY:The Impact of COVID-19 on the Careers of Women in Academic STEMM
DESCRIPTION:Spring 2020 changed in how nearly everyone conducted their personal and professional lives. For academic STEMM\, the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic ranged from delayed experiments in individual laboratories to cancelled global scientific conferences. People shifted classes to virtual platforms\, and negotiated with family members for workspace in their homes. This changed reality blurred the boundaries between work and nonwork\, infusing ambiguity into everyday activities. While adaptations allowed people to stay connected\, the evidence available at the end of 2020 suggested that the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic endangered the engagement\, experience\, and retention of women in academic STEMM. \nOn Tuesday March 9\, 2021\, join the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine for the public release of the consensus study report\, The Impact of COVID-19 on the Careers of Women in Academic Science\, Engineering\, and Medicine. The report explores how the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the careers of women in academic STEMM during 2020 and considers how these disruptions—both positive and negative—might shape future progress for women in academic STEMM. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Endometriosis Awareness: Empowering Patients
DESCRIPTION:Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological disease that may cause pelvic pain\, pain between periods\, back pain\, pain with sex\, infertility\, and other symptoms\, severely impacting a woman’s quality of life. An estimated 200 million individuals worldwide are living with endometriosis. However\, societal stigma around menstruation can prevent women from discussing life-disrupting\, period-related symptoms\, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment for endometriosis. \nThis SWHR webinar provides valuable insight for both patients and health care providers on opportunities to empower people living with endometriosis. \nHear endometriosis experts and a patient advocate speak about: \n\nthe burden of endometriosis and menstrual stigma\ndiagnosis and treatment options\nthe patient journey and tips for living well with endometriosis\n\nLearn more about this disease and the work of SWHR’s Endometriosis and Fibroids Network.

SUMMARY:Advancing Health Outcomes for Women and Minorities
DESCRIPTION:Springboard Enterprises and the Women’s Health Innovation Coalition host a virtual congressional briefing featuring SWHR President & CEO Kathryn G. Schubert on March 17\, 2021 from 12PM – 1PM ET. There are biological and genetic differences that impact women’s health\, and the underrepresentation of women and minorities in research is contributing to a lack of data\, understanding\, investment and innovation to address diseases/conditions that exclusively\, disproportionately or differentially impact women. For example\, adverse drug events are twice as common for women and little to no research is conducted on improving health outcomes for mothers who are pregnant\, postpartum and throughout the entire first year of her newborn’s life. These are just some of the systemic obstacles contributing to significant and avoidable safety and efficacy issues for female and minority populations. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Supporting Our Sisters: Transforming Uterine Fibroid Awareness into Action
DESCRIPTION:The Congressional Caucus on Black Women and Girls hosted a virtual event raising awareness of the astounding impact of uterine fibroids on the health of women. Congresswoman Yvette Clarke (D-NY) led a conversation with fibroid researchers\, clinicians\, and patient advocates on the challenges experienced by women living with this disease and the barriers to accessing to quality care and treatment. \nThe event also highlighted the importance of the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Uterine Fibroid Research and Education Act of 2021\, which would improve funding for research and increase education about uterine fibroids. The bill was first introduced by its current namesake\, the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio)\, in the House of Representatives in 2001. Clarke and then-Senator (now Vice President) Kamala Harris reintroduced the legislation last year. This bill is supported by the Black Women’s Health Imperative\, the Society for Women’s Health Research\, the Fibroid Foundation\, and the White Dress Project. \nSpeakers\n\nCongresswoman Yvette Clarke (D-NY)\nCynthia Bailey-Hill\, TV personality\, Real Housewives of Atlanta\nTambra Cherie\, TV personality\, Belle Collective\nRachel Villanueva\, President-Elect\, National Medical Association\nSateria Venable\, Founder\, Fibroid Foundation\nTanika Gray Valbrun\, White Dress Project\nErica Marsh\, S. SUMMARY:Overcoming Barriers to Diversifying Clinical Trials: Lessons Learned from Regulatory Agencies\, Industry\, and Federal and Private Funders
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, March 29\, 2021\, join the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine for a virtual event regarding its consensus study report\, Improving the Representation of Women and Underrepresented Minorities in Clinical Trials and Research. Clinical trials and clinical research often do not represent the demographic diversity of the populations that the novel drugs and interventions they are testing aim to serve. This workshop will review the challenges and barriers to having full representation and inclusion in clinical trials and clinical research with stakeholder groups that will provide oversight and funding for this work. It will also explore approaches and strategies for these stakeholder groups to address and overcome these challenges. The workshop’s panels and discussions will inform the ongoing work of the NASEM Committee on Improving the Representation of Women and Underrepresented Minorities in Clinical Trials and Research. \nRegister
