SUMMARY:Migraine Matters: Women Navigating Wellness Across the Lifespan
DESCRIPTION:SWHR hosted a webinar on August 4\, 2021 featuring a panel of women who spoke to diverse patient experiences with migraine across the lifespan\, from young adult and student life through midlife and post-reproductive years. During the webinar\, panelists shared insights from their personal journeys and reviewed strategies across key areas of physical\, emotional\, environmental\, and social wellness.  \nMigraine is a chronic disease in which a person has attacks of moderate to severe head pain and symptoms\, which can include nausea and extreme sensitivity to light\, sounds and smells. Migraines can last 4 to 72 hours if untreated.   \nThree out of four people living with migraine are women\, and women are more likely to experience longer and more intense migraine attacks\, as well as higher levels of disability.  \nAbout 17% of women experience episodic migraine and 1.3% of women have chronic migraine\, in which they experience 15 or more headache days per month for at least 3 months in a row. One in 13 women have menstrually-related migraine attacks. While symptoms are generally the same\, the main distinction between migraine types is the frequency\, timing\, and duration of attacks\, and an individual’s type of migraine may change over their lifetime.  \nManaging migraine disease often requires a personalized approach that combines medical treatments and wellness strategies to help each individual achieve a full and functional life. The Society for Women’s Health Research has created patient toolkits and fact sheets to increase migraine awareness and assist individuals living with migraine toward better health and support.

SUMMARY:Women’s Immunization Education Initiative: Preventing Infectious Diseases through Vaccinations
DESCRIPTION:According to the U.S. Department of Labor\, women make 80% of the healthcare decisions in the family. Women caregivers are in a unique position to ensure their family members receive the appropriate vaccines as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and their healthcare providers over the course of the lifespan. This includes childhood vaccinations (such as DTAP\, polio\, MMR)\, teen vaccinations (such as HPV and MenB)\, and adult vaccinations (such as Hep A & B and shingles)\, along with annual flu shots for all ages. CDC reports indicate that U.S. adult vaccination rates remain low for many routinely recommended vaccines\, leading to increased illness\, hospitalization\, disability\, and even death. Improved immunization rates can assist in reducing racial/ethnic disparities in healthcare across all age groups. Women\, as the primary health care decision-makers in the home\, need scientifically-based and culturally-relevant information to make informed decisions to optimize their family’s health. \nSWHR is convening a working group of public health researchers and professionals\, community leaders\, patient advocates\, and health care providers for a closed\, 1-day roundtable meeting on August 9\, 2021. During the roundtable\, the SWHR Immunization Education Working Group will discuss how to eliminate barriers to information and access and reduce health disparities through the development of educational materials designed to reach women as immunization recipients and decision-makers. \nSupport for this educational program has been provided by Merck & Co.
