SUMMARY:More than Skin Deep: Understanding the Impact of Autoimmune Skin Diseases on Women’s Health
DESCRIPTION:Autoimmune conditions cause a person’s immune system to attack the body’s own tissues and organs\, including the skin. Because the skin is so visible and important to the body’s physiological function\, skin diseases can impact a person’s physical and mental wellbeing and carry a large public health burden\, despite their relative understudy. \nAtopic dermatitis (a common type of eczema) is characterized by itchy\, dry\, flakey\, and irritated skin\, and can affect women differently over the lifespan. In the United States\, an estimated 16.5 million people are affected with atopic dermatitis. 700\,000 people have been diagnosed with alopecia areata\, which causes hair loss primarily in small round patches on the scalp\, but can also affect eyebrows\, eyelashes\, and other hair-bearing areas of the body. Up to 30% of ~8 million individuals with psoriasis will also develop psoriatic arthritis. This immune-mediated condition has inflammatory affects on the skin\, joints\, and tendons. These are just three autoimmune and immune-mediated skin diseases that affect women disproportionately and differently than men. \nOn October 18\, 2021\, SWHR hosted a virtual public forum where panelists discussed the health\, social\, and economic impacts of autoimmune skin diseases on women – as patients\, as caregivers\, and as both.

SUMMARY:Menopause Mindfulness: Exploring Menopause's Effect on Health and Well-Being
DESCRIPTION:Menopause is a natural life stage that all women will encounter after a certain age. Despite its known associations with increased health risk for cardiovascular disease\, stroke\, osteoporosis\, and other health conditions\, employers\, policymakers\, and the general public have a very limited understanding of the impacts of the menopause transition on women’s health. Moreover\, research has documented a lack of discussion surrounding menopause\, including what to expect\, how women communicate about their experience\, and social and workplace support needs. \nIn recognition of World Menopause Awareness Month\, the Society for Women’s Health Research hosted the congressional briefing\, “Menopause Mindfulness: Exploring Menopause’s Effect on Health and Well-Being\,” on October 26\, 2021. During this briefing\, panelists shared information about menopause\, including current research gaps\, the health risks for women during this life stage\, and the stigma often associated with menopause and aging. \nVIEW THE RECORDING \nRead a summary blog about the event here.  \n  \nThis event is part of the SWHR Menopause Mindfulness series: \n\nCalls for Research Funding and Addressing Stigma Related to Menopause Congressional Briefing (October 26\, 2021)\nEmbracing the Change of My Midlife (February 16\, 2022)\nA Personal Toolkit for Menopause Preparedness (July 14\, 2022)\nUnderstanding the Many Paths to Menopause (August 11\, 2022)\nLiving Your Best Work-Life through the Menopause Transition (September 8\, 2022)
