SUMMARY:MIT Sex Differences Series
DESCRIPTION:Looking for the latest on sex differences in biology and immune responses? Check out SWHR’s collection of peer-reviewed articles on women’s health research\, sex differences\, and gaps in care outcomes for women facing conditions ranging from migraines to endometriosis.  \n\nOn January 19\, 2022\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will kick off a new series of discussions and seminars called “SeXX and Immunity.” These sessions will explore our understanding of sex differences and sex dimorphism in relation to immune responses and how presentations of infectious diseases differ based on biology. \nThe first session will feature Dr. Sabra Klein of Johns Hopkins University\, for a talk titled “SeXX matters for viral infection and vaccination.” Sabra Klein\, PhD\, is Professor of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She holds joint appointments in the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and International Health and participates in the Cellular and Molecular Medicine Program at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. \n\n\nThis event offers both in-person and virtual opportunities. In-person attendees will enjoy a poster session\, networking\, snacks\, beverages\, and t-shirts. If you are unable to attend in person\, please select the virtual attendance option at registration. The in-person January 19 event will also include a poster session to initiate lively conversation and collaborations between local researchers and clinicians working on all aspects of gynecology\, infection\, immune responses with an interest in better understanding how sexual dimorphisms manifest in these areas. The event will also have e-posters\, where speakers can give mini presentations at and showcase their research. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:How Vaccines and Screening Can Prevent Cervical Cancer
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, there are more than 100 diagnostic tests and procedures available for detecting diseases and monitoring their progression. Diagnostic tools are also used to guide treatments and evaluate their effectiveness. Some tests are invasive\, such as a biopsy or endoscopy; whereas others are noninvasive\, such as x-rays and ultrasound imaging procedures. \nInnovations in diagnostics provide access to health information\, helping women make informed decisions about their health care at every stage of their lives. Screening and diagnostic testing can lead to earlier detection of disease\, improve health outcomes\, and contribute toward reducing health disparities among women. \nSWHR hosts a series of public forums to share educational information about the importance and value of innovative diagnostics throughout the lifespan and across disease states and conditions. The events discuss how to improve health outcomes for diseases and conditions that disproportionately or exclusively affect women\, with special a focus on cancers\, reproductive health\, and bone health. \n  \nThe SWHR Value of Diagnostics within Women’s Health series includes: \n\nHow Vaccines and Screening Can Prevent Cervical Cancer (January 26\, 2022)\nImproving Lives by Detecting Sexually Transmitted Infections Early (April 13\, 2022)\nAssessing and Promoting Bone Health Across the Lifespan (May 18\, 2022)\nHow Hormones Can Tell a Fertility Story (June 8\, 2022)\nOvarian Cancer Screening: More than a Pelvic Exam (September 7\, 2022)\nUnderstanding the Tests that Could Save My Breasts (October 12\, 2022)

SUMMARY:Hearing Native Mothers – A Tribal Discussion Session on a Campaign to Support Healthy AI/AN Pregnancies and Maternal Health
DESCRIPTION:Mothers are cherished\, sacred members of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities\, and hold distinct roles of nourishing\, teaching\, and leading their families. For many\, pregnancy can be an exciting\, joyous time. However\, while rare\, too many mothers die each year from complications related to pregnancy\, and AI/AN people are disproportionately affected. Join the National Indian Health Board (NIHB) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for a special discussion session on a new campaign segment aimed to support AI/AN healthy pregnancies and postpartum health\, based on the existing Hear Her campaign. During the session\, CDC speakers will provide a brief overview of the campaign. The host will then provide time for Tribal participants to provide input on the proposed campaign themes and materials\, and best strategies for reaching Tribal communities. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Diverse Voices Virtual Talk: Cancer in Women
DESCRIPTION:ORWH’s virtual speaker series titled “Diverse Voices: Intersectionality and the Health of Women” disseminates research findings that (1) are relevant to diverse groups of women and (2) incorporate a multidimensional sex-and-gender focus. The speaker series aims to increase public awareness\, understanding\, and engagement with research relevant to diverse populations of women; to highlight work by investigators receiving ORWH funding\, with ORWH affiliations\, and/or employing an intersectional or multidimensional framework. \nThe January 27\, 2022\, session of “Diverse Voices: Intersectionality and the Health of Women” will focus on cancer in women\, featuring presentations from Drs. Kemi Doll and Katie O’Brien. Dr. Doll will present on PCORI’s SISTER Study\, a randomized controlled trial that leverages two virtual evidence-based peer support interventions (one-on-one peer support and facilitated support groups) to improve outcomes for Black women with endometrial cancer. She will discuss the benefits of social support to adherence\, treatment completion\, and quality of life for women undergoing cancer treatment. Dr. O’Brien will present on NIEHS’ Sister Study\, which investigates environmental and genetic risk factors for breast cancer using a cohort of over 50\,000 women who have a sister with a breast cancer diagnosis. She will discuss recruitment strategies being used to enhance diversity within the cohort and new efforts by Sister Study investigators to better understand the role of race and ethnicity in cancer etiology. \nREGISTER
