SUMMARY:Women and Minority Health Innovation Gaps & Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:The Women’s Health Innovation Coalition and G2G Consulting invite all to a Congressional Briefing on Women and Minority Health Innovation Gaps & Opportunities on April 11\, 2022\, from 1PM-2 PM ET. \nJust 8% of VC funding went to women-led start-ups in 2019 and that fell to 2.3% in 2020\, according to the Harvard Business Review. Black and Latinx founders raised $2.3 billion in funding\, representing just 2.6% of the total $87.3 billion in funding that went to all founders in first three quarters of 2020 and for Black- and Latinx-founded companies\, 36% have a female founder\, according to Crunchbase. Just 4% of research and development being dedicated to women’s health issues\, according to Crunchbase. \nWhen women-led startups do get funded\, they deliver higher revenue — more than twice as much per dollar invested\, according to the Boston Consulting Group. With several health conditions solely\, disproportionately and/or differently impacting women and decades of scientific research conducted exclusively on white males that is used today to inform patient care\, organizations must accelerate funding and innovation to address these gaps that too often harm patients and can cost lives and avoidable wasted expenditures. Dial into this online event and learn more! \nOpening Remarks by Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL-21) \nPanelists: \n\nNatalie Buford-Young\, Chief Executive Officer of Springboard Enterprises\nSheena D. Franklin\, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of K’ept Health\nValerie Palmieri\, Executive Chairwoman of the Board of Aspira Women’s Health\nLinda Greub\, General Partner at Avestria Ventures\nModerated by: Ami Sanchez\, Government Affairs Director of G2G Consulting\n\nJoin to discuss these gaps\, the value of investing in this field\, and policy solutions to accelerate the development of innovations addressing women’s health and minority health issues. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:WOMEN'S HEALTH FORUM SERIES: GYNECOLOGICAL & SEXUAL HEALTH
DESCRIPTION:The Women’s Health Innovation Forum is a series of discussion sessions highlighting opportunities for investment in research and innovation in the field of women’s health. These events will shine a light on innovative solutions that address unmet needs in diseases\, conditions\, and indications that solely\, predominantly\, or differently impact the health of women. \nPart I – The Patient’s Voice: The host is gathering a panel of patient advocacy groups and the very patients they represent to share their lived experiences and hear how innovative solutions impact their lives/work. \n\n\nPart II – Founders and Funders: Hearing directly from patients why innovative solutions are desperately needed in all aspects of women’s health\, the host will then highlight the founders working to get those solutions out there\, and the funders who help make that possible. \n\n\n\nWhy Gynecological and Sexual Health? As many as 75% of women will experience pain during sex at some point\, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. A recent study found menopause to be a $600B market. Yet\, these topics are so often stigmatized and considered taboo subjects. The host is bringing the gynecology and women’s sexual health community together to discuss current challenges and breakthroughs in gynecology and sexual health and to bring awareness to these conditions.\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Improving Lives by Detecting Sexually Transmitted Infections Early
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, there are more than 100 diagnostic tests and procedures available for detecting diseases and monitoring their progression. Diagnostic tools are also used to guide treatments and evaluate their effectiveness. Some tests are invasive\, such as a biopsy or endoscopy; whereas others are noninvasive\, such as x-rays and ultrasound imaging procedures. \nInnovations in diagnostics provide access to health information\, helping women make informed decisions about their health care at every stage of their lives. Screening and diagnostic testing can lead to earlier detection of disease\, improve health outcomes\, and contribute toward reducing health disparities among women. \nSWHR is hosting a series of public forums to share educational information about the importance and value of innovative diagnostics throughout the lifespan and across disease states and conditions. The events discuss how to improve health outcomes for diseases and conditions that disproportionately or exclusively affect women\, with special a focus on cancers\, reproductive health\, and bone health. \nThe SWHR Value of Diagnostics within Women’s Health series includes: \n\nHow Vaccines and Screening Can Prevent Cervical Cancer (January 26\, 2022)\nImproving Lives by Detecting Sexually Transmitted Infections Early (April 13\, 2022)\nAssessing and Promoting Bone Health Across the Lifespan (May 18\, 2022)\nHow Hormones Can Tell a Fertility Story (June 8\, 2022)\nOvarian Cancer Screening: More than a Pelvic Exam (September 7\, 2022)\nUnderstanding the Tests that Could Save My Breasts (October 12\, 2022)

SUMMARY:Bone Health Roundtable: Importance of Women’s Bone Health Throughout the Lifespan
DESCRIPTION:April 19\, 1:30 p.m.-4 p.m. — Bone Health Roundtable (Day 1) \nApril 20\, 12:30 p.m.-4 p.m. — Bone Health Roundtable (Day 2) \nApproximately 54 million Americans have low bone mass\, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis – a condition in which bones become weak and brittle. Risk of bone fracture is higher in women compared to men\, in part\, because women tend to have smaller\, thinner bones and due to the influence of estrogen – a hormone whose protective effects change throughout the life-course\, especially after menopause. Bone mass is also affected by genetic and environmental factors such as ancestry\, nutrition\, and physical activity. \nBreaking a bone is a serious complication of osteoporosis\, and approximately half of all women over age 50 will break a bone because of osteoporosis. In older adults\, complications related to a broken bone can be life threatening and result in a need for long-term nursing care. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation\, an estimated 50% of repeat fractures could be avoided with both cost- effective and well-tolerated treatments. Shifting from a reactive break-and-fix model to one that centers around predictive and preventive bone health and wellness could substantially decrease the clinical and public health burden of bone fractures and diseases. \n\n\n\nAs the nation’s thought leader in promoting research on biological sex differences in disease and improving women’s health through science\, policy\, and education\, the Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) convened an interdisciplinary Bone Health Working Group of health care providers\, researchers\, patient advocates\, and policy leaders for a closed\, roundtable meeting in April 2022. During the roundtable\, the Working Group discussed scientific and policy issues in women’s bone health\, including strategies for fracture prevention in at-risk women.
