SUMMARY:FEMTECH UNTAPPED - Holistic approach to better menstrual health
DESCRIPTION:FemTech Untapped is an online program and a global movement tapping into areas of women’s health that have long been underserved\, underresearched\, and underfunded. In 2022\, the program will be covering a wide range of topics with a goal to educate and destigmatize areas of FemTech that still remain “untapped”. \nJoin in every month for a series of events where the team will cover topics from diversity and inclusion in the femtech space\, to menstrual health and sextech\, to mental and cardiovascular health for women and underrepresented audiences and groups in the healthcare space. \nAbout “Holistic approach to better menstrual health” \nMenstrual health is much more than just menstruation. According to UNICEF\, it encompasses the broader impacts of the psychological\, socio-political and environmental factors that accompany menstruation on mental\, physical\, and emotional health. \nMenstruation is a natural fact of life and a monthly occurrence for the 1.8 billion girls\, women\, transgender men and non-binary persons of reproductive age and\, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services\, 90% of them experience premenstrual symptoms. \nAt least 20% of people with PMS are experiencing debilitating symptoms due to chronic conditions such as endometriosis\, PCOS\, and fibroids. Studies show hormonal contraceptives\, very often used to alleviate symptoms of PMS and painful periods\, could impact mood and be linked to increased rates of depression and breast cancer. \nGlobally\, at least 500 million menstruators lack adequate facilities for menstrual hygiene management according to World Bank. \nA holistic approach to better menstrual health is needed; an approach that will include education\, addressing stigmas and taboos; an approach that guarantees every menstruator has access to menstrual hygiene products and teaches them how to better understand their menstrual health; an approach that allows them to learn about different products and solutions so that they can make more informed decisions about their own bodies and their own health. \nSPEAKERS \n\nLulu Ge\, founder and CEO of Elix\nAnne Marie Jukic\, Principal Investigator at National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences\nSeung Min Lee\, co-founder of INERTIA\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Assessing and Promoting Bone Health Across the Lifespan
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn the United States\, there are more than 100 diagnostic tests and procedures available for detecting diseases and monitoring their progression. Diagnostic tools are also used to guide treatments and evaluate their effectiveness. Some tests are invasive\, such as a biopsy or endoscopy; whereas others are noninvasive\, such as x-rays and ultrasound imaging procedures. \nInnovations in diagnostics provide access to health information\, helping women make informed decisions about their health care at every stage of their lives. Screening and diagnostic testing can lead to earlier detection of disease\, improve health outcomes\, and contribute toward reducing health disparities among women. \nSWHR is hosting a series of public forums to share educational information about the importance and value of innovative diagnostics throughout the lifespan and across disease states and conditions. The events will discuss how to improve health outcomes for diseases and conditions that disproportionately or exclusively affect women\, with special a focus on cancers\, reproductive health\, and bone health. \nThe SWHR Value of Diagnostics within Women’s Health series includes: \n\nHow Vaccines and Screening Can Prevent Cervical Cancer (January 26\, 2022)\nImproving Lives by Detecting Sexually Transmitted Infections Early (April 13\, 2022)\nAssessing and Promoting Bone Health Across the Lifespan (May 18\, 2022)\nHow Hormones Can Tell a Fertility Story (June 8\, 2022)\nOvarian Cancer Screening: More than a Pelvic Exam (September 7\, 2022)\nUnderstanding the Tests that Could Save My Breasts (October 12\, 2022)

According to Statista\, the size of the sexual wellness market will be 37.2 billion U.S. dollars next year. \nIn 2022\, however\, sexual health and wellness are still stigmatized\, covered in shame and taboo. Sexual health education\, data gap related to female pleasure\, and lack of research related to women’s health are some of the main reasons many sexual health and wellness startups exist and build their innovative products around. \nSPEAKERS \n\nJohanna Rief\, Global Director of Public Relations & Head of Sexual Empowerment at Lovehoney Group\nDaphne Chen\, co-CEO and co-founder of TBD Health\nRebecca Sternberg\, Co-Founder of Aquafit Intimate\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Steps to Strengthen America’s Seniors: How Preventing Osteoporosis Helps America’s Health System
DESCRIPTION:Osteoporosis is a disease that decreases bone mineral density and mass\, causing the bones to become weak and brittle. Affecting about 45 million Americans\, osteoporosis is common – but it is more common in women (women account for 80% of the estimated 10 million Americans age 50 and older with osteoporosis). One in two women will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. Osteoporosis is also costly. Each year\, it is responsible for 2 million broken bones and $19 billion in related costs\, with implications for rehabilitation and long-term care. \nIn May\, National Osteoporosis Month\, the Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR)\, in partnership with the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation (BHOF) and the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR)\, hosted a national webinar and congressional briefing to discuss osteoporosis and its disproportionate impact on women as well as its impact on society. During this briefing\, panelists discussed the importance of elevating conversations surrounding bone health; ensuring sufficient research funding; and driving policy change to improve access to appropriate bone health screening\, including DXA screenings\, and treatment to ensure better health outcomes.

SUMMARY:Heterogeneity of Breast Cancer Genomes: Going Beyond Therapy to Risk Assessment and Precision Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:This is the annual Marshall W. Nirenberg Lecture. This lecture\, established in 2011\, recognizes Marshall Nirenberg for his work to decipher the genetic code\, which resulted in his receiving the 1968 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Speaker Funmi Olopade studies familial forms of cancers\, molecular mechanisms of tumor progression in high-risk individuals as well as genetic and non-genetic factors contributing to tumor progression in diverse populations. Her current laboratory research is focused on using whole genome technologies and bioinformatics to develop innovative approaches to democratize precision health care for all and thereby reduce global health disparities. Dr. Olopade is an expert in cancer risk assessment and individualized treatment for the most aggressive forms of breast cancer based on an understanding of the altered genes in individual patients. She stresses comprehensive risk reducing strategies and prevention in high-risk populations\, as well as earlier detection through advanced imaging technologies.\n\nREGISTER
