SUMMARY:Ovarian Cancer Screening: More than a Pelvic Exam
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, there are more than 100 diagnostic tests and procedures available for detecting diseases and monitoring their progression. Diagnostic tools are also used to guide treatments and evaluate their effectiveness. Some tests are invasive\, such as a biopsy or endoscopy; whereas others are noninvasive\, such as x-rays and ultrasound imaging procedures. \nInnovations in diagnostics provide access to health information\, helping women make informed decisions about their health care at every stage of their lives. Screening and diagnostic testing can lead to earlier detection of disease\, improve health outcomes\, and contribute toward reducing health disparities among women. \nSWHR is hosting a series of public forums to share educational information about the importance and value of innovative diagnostics throughout the lifespan and across disease states and conditions. The events will discuss how to improve health outcomes for diseases and conditions that disproportionately or exclusively affect women\, with special a focus on cancers\, reproductive health\, and bone health. \nThe SWHR Value of Diagnostics within Women’s Health series includes: \n\nHow Vaccines and Screening Can Prevent Cervical Cancer (January 26\, 2022)\nImproving Lives by Detecting Sexually Transmitted Infections Early (April 13\, 2022)\nAssessing and Promoting Bone Health Across the Lifespan (May 18\, 2022)\nHow Hormones Can Tell a Fertility Story (June 8\, 2022)\nOvarian Cancer Screening: More than a Pelvic Exam (September 7\, 2022)\nUnderstanding the Tests that Could Save My Breasts (October 12\, 2022)

SUMMARY:Menopause Mindfulness: Living Your Best Work-Life through the Menopause Transition
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nApproximately 1.3 million women in the United States transition into menopause each year. During the menopause transition (perimenopause)\, the body undergoes hormonal changes\, characterized by a significant decrease in estrogen. This change typically begins to occur in a woman’s late 40s or 50s\, and can last up to 10 or 20 years. However\, some individuals may experience menopause early due to certain medical conditions or surgical procedures. Menopause\, itself\, is defined as the point in time 12 months after a woman’s last menstrual cycle.\n\nEstrogen depletion can cause a variety of vasomotor symptoms\, such as hot flashes\, brain fog\, and fatigue\, as well as genital and urinary symptoms\, such as vaginal dryness and urinary incontinence. Postmenopausal women have increased risks of other health conditions\, such as cardiovascular disease\, osteoporosis\, skin issues\, cognitive decline\, and insomnia. Menopausal symptoms and experiences vary widely from person to person. Raising awareness and improving access to information about menopause can help reduce stigma\, dispel myths\, and better prepare women and their health care providers to address potential challenges during this stage in their lives. \nSWHR hosted a series of webinars to share educational information about the impact of menopause on women’s health. The events discuss how to improve health outcomes through recognizing and addressing symptoms\, comorbidities\, treatment options\, and barriers to accessing quality care\, while highlighting the diverse experiences of women during and after the menopause transition. \nThe SWHR Menopause Mindfulness series includes: \n\nCalls for Research Funding and Addressing Stigma Related to Menopause Congressional Briefing (October 26\, 2021)\nEmbracing the Change of My Midlife (February 16\, 2022)\nA Personal Toolkit for Menopause Preparedness (July 14\, 2022)\nUnderstanding the Many Paths to Menopause (August 11\, 2022)\nLiving Your Best Work-Life through the Menopause Transition (September 8\, 2022)

SUMMARY:Addressing Systemic Racism in Cancer Prevention and Control: Sharing Opportunities and Experiences
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, organizations that include advocacy\, research\, and clinical and professional societies have condemned or called for addressing racism and advancing health equity. In January 2021\, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) published a methods report on the definitional and conceptual issues around racism and health inequity to describe how racism and health inequities are currently addressed in preventive health. This panel presentation will present findings from the USPSTF methods report and offer two examples of current work\, practice\, and research to address racism in health systems. Join learn more about the report and about opportunities and experiences in working to address systemic racism. \n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Climate Change & Maternal Health
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is having a profound impact on the environment\, and in turn\, health. In HHS Region 2 (New Jersey\, New York\, Puerto Rico & the US Virgin Islands)\, climate change is linked to warmer temperatures\, rising sea levels\, declining air and water quality\, and an increase in extreme weather events – particularly heat and precipitation.\nThese changes directly affect the health and wellbeing of individuals living across communities. Yet climate change does not affect everyone equally. Climate change exacerbates existing social vulnerabilities and generates differential risks across the lifespan of individuals.\nThis webinar is part of a series that seeks to understand how climate change affects the health of specific populations – children\, pregnant individuals (and their babies)\, and older adults\, for health and human service providers and allied stakeholders in HHS Region 2. These populations face elevated risks\, and often bear the burden of disproportionate impacts.\n\n\nREGISTER
