SUMMARY:Women’s Brain Project Special Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Women’s Brain Project (WBP)\, as the world experts in the field of sex (biological) and gender (societal) determinants of brain and mental health to achieve precision medicine and care\, commissioned Economist Impact to examine the beneficial economic rationale for investing in sex and gender specific brain research. \nTackling brain diseases is not just a health problem\, but also an economic one – including direct and indirect costs\, loss of productivity and quality of life. In this context\, sex- and gender-specific outcomes from biomedical research may influence productivity\, as well as national economic outcomes\, both directly and indirectly. However\, until now the impact of sex/gender in research and the economy has been neglected. It is therefore crucial to examine the economic impact of investing in sex and gender differentiated brain research. \nThis webinar will focus on the launch of our White Paper commissioned to Economist Impact on ‘Sex\, gender and the brain: Towards an inclusive Research Agenda.’ We invite you all to join us to discuss\, ask questions\, and learn more on Monday 13th March\, 15:30-16:30 CET. \nMonday 13th March also marks the start of Brain Awareness Week. \nSign up now and look forward to learning from our co-founder and CEO\, Dr Antonella Santuccione Chadha\, our co-founder and CSO\, Dr Maria Teresa Ferretti\, our Head of Policy & Advocacy\, Anna Dé\, and many other experts. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:The Role of Federal Agencies in Supporting Women with Autoimmune Diseases and Conditions
DESCRIPTION:According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services\, autoimmune diseases—a group of more than 80 chronic diseases that develop when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own healthy organs\, tissues\, and cells—are a leading cause of death and disability\, and their treatment costs are estimated to be greater than $100 billion annually. Autoimmune diseases take a disproportionate toll on women\, who represent 80% of patients diagnosed with autoimmune diseases. \nDuring this national webinar\, panelists discussed how different U.S. public health and research agencies support women with autoimmune diseases and conditions and which resources within these agencies can help women navigate their autoimmune journey. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nCheck out the full SWHR 2023 Autoimmune Policy series: \n\nThe Growing National Burden of Autoimmune Diseases and the Role of Policy in Improving Outcomes (January 17\, 2023)\nCoverage and Access Issues Affecting Women Living with Autoimmune Diseases (February 7\, 2023)\nThe Role of Federal Agencies in Supporting Women with Autoimmune Diseases and Conditions (March 17\, 2023)\nDiversity in Autoimmune Clinical Trials: Addressing Areas of Need and Opportunity (March 30\, 2023)

SUMMARY:Workshop: Developing a Framework to Address Legal\, Ethical\, Regulatory\, and Policy Issues for Research Specific to Pregnant and Lactating Persons
DESCRIPTION:Pregnant and lactating persons are frequently excluded from clinical research\, and often have to make treatment decisions without an adequate understanding of the benefits and risks to themselves and their developing fetus or newborn baby. The Committee on Developing a Framework to Address Legal\, Ethical\, Regulatory\, and Policy Issues for Research Specific to Pregnant and Lactating Persons will hold a public workshop on March 23 to discuss how institutions and organizations make risk-benefit decisions regarding the inclusion and exclusion of pregnant and lactating persons in clinical research\, and the roles of liability\, risk management\, and trial insurance in those decisions. Speakers will also address existing compensation schemes for research-related injuries and potential to scale these models to serve the needs of research participants. \nThe event will be accessible via live webcast. Learn more on the event page. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Diversity in Autoimmune Clinical Trials: Addressing Areas of Need and Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Tackling autoimmune diseases and conditions is dependent on understanding genetic and environmental mechanisms of disease and identifying treatments and interventions that work for everyone\, regardless of sex\, gender\, race\, or ethnicity. Therefore\, recruiting and retaining a diversity of patient populations within clinical trials is essential. Yet\, it is well-documented that certain populations — including women and racial and ethnic minority populations — have historically been underrepresented in clinical trials. While problematic in and of itself\, underrepresentation can be particularly problematic for clinical trials for autoimmune diseases and conditions\, which disproportionately affect women and specific racial groups. \nDuring this SWHR Instagram Live event\, experts discussed why clinical trial representation is critical for improving outcomes and where they see the greatest issues in trial participation.
