SUMMARY:4th NCI Symposium on Cancer Health Disparities
DESCRIPTION:The 4th NCI Symposium on Cancer Health Disparities will be hybrid (both in-person and virtual).  Registration is required to receive the link to join virtually. \nCancer health disparities affect millions of people across the United States and globally. Disparities in cancer burden are evident by geography\, race/ethnicity\, genetic ancestry\, immigrant status\, culture\, gender\, sexual orientation (LGBTQ+)\, and socioeconomic class\, among other factors. Cancer disparities are not only due to barriers in access to health care\, but also due to cultural barriers\, structural racism and environmental disadvantage\, ancestry-related risk factors\, persistent co-morbidities\, and chronic stress exposure because of discrimination and social isolation. The challenge of reducing and eliminating health disparities and achieving equity has been largely attributed to the complex interactions among these various determinants. \nThe symposium will highlight a range of topics to address the systemic barriers and racism that lead to health disparities and showcase ongoing research being done in the social\, clinical\, epidemiologic\, and basic science disciplines. Hosts seek to feature challenges and solutions\, and the programs that were developed to address cancer health disparities from researchers in the field and within the intramural NCI program. \nMain Topics \n\nAchieving Clinical Trial Diversity and How it may Reduce Disparities in Cancer Care.\nCancer Control Research in Persistent Poverty Areas.\nStructural Racism:  What it is and How it Contributes to Cancer Disparities.\nInfluence of Ancestry and the Environment on Tumor Biology.\nUsing Epidemiologic Methods to Advance Health Disparities Research.\nHealth Disparities in the LBGTQ+ Community: From Measuring Sex\, Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation to Intervention.\nRole of Telemedicine in Overcoming Cancer Health Disparities in the United States.\n\nFollow the conversation on Twitter: #NCICHD23 \nRegistration Deadline is March 28\, 2023 \nREGISTER \nOrganizing Committee: Stefan Ambs\, Constanza Camargo\, Jiyeon Choi\, Alexandra Harris\, Wayne Lawrence\, Brittany Lord\, Sheila Rajagopal\, Ramya Ramaswami\, Jongeun Rhee\, Tiffany Wallace \nSupported by the CCR Cancer Health Disparities Interest Group\, DCEG Cancer Health Disparity Working Group\, DCEG Fellows’ Cancer Health Disparity Interest Group

SUMMARY:Our Brain\, Ourselves | 30 Years of the NIH Revitalization Act
DESCRIPTION:June 2023 will mark the 30th anniversary of the NIH Revitalization Act of 1993\, which established guidelines for the inclusion of women and minorities in all NIH-funded research. WHAM is excited to recognize the anniversary of this historic Act by hosting a series of events throughout the year\, exploring what’s changed\, what hasn’t\, and where we need to go next.\n\nWomen are disproportionately and differently impacted by diseases and conditions affecting our brains. 2/3 of the 6.7 million people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and 2/3 of the caregivers are women. Women are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression\, the leading cause of disability. Yet despite some advances in our understanding in women’s brain health\, the field continues to be understudied and underfunded and women are suffering the consequences. Only 1/3 of the animals used in neuroscience research are women and just 12% of the 2019 NIH Alzheimer’s budget went to research focused on women.\n\nJoin for this roundtable to learn more about where we are today with women’s brain health and where we need to be\, featuring:\nMODERATOR\n\nMeryl Comer\, Vice Chair\, WHAM; Co-Founder\, UsAgainstAlzheimers\n\nPANELISTS\n\nDr. Rachel Buckley\, Assistant Professor of Neurology\, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Hospital Research: Effects of menopause and sex differences in Alzheimer’s Disease\nRebecca Chopp\, Alzheimer’s Advocate and Author; Chancellor Emerita\, University of Denver\nDr. Malú Gámez Tansey\, Co-Director Center for Translational Research in Neurodegenerative Disease and the Parkinson’s Foundation Research Center of Excellence\, College of Medicine\, University of Florida Research: Stress\, microbiome\, and sex differences in immune responses\nDr. Sharyn Rossi\, Director\, Scientific Programs\, Neuroscience\, BrightFocus Foundation; former Senior Research Scientist\, National Institute on Aging Research: Novel interventions to investigate changes in the brain during normal cognitive aging\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Can We Have Value Without Equity? A Conversation with Healthcare Leaders
DESCRIPTION:Join Reservoir Communications Group for a webinar on how to include equity in value-based care across the healthcare ecosystem. \nEquity in healthcare occurs when every person has the opportunity to achieve their full potential of health and wellness. However\, since many value frameworks do not fully address health equity\, how can we build a value-based healthcare system that eliminates barriers for vulnerable populations? Hosts will explore this question and other important themes during this hour-long conversation. \nHistorically\, conversations around value and health equity have been siloed. But an increased federal focus on value-based care\, coupled with key disparity data\, and new voices driving innovative solutions is positioning equity as an integral part of the value-based care conversation. \nThis webinar brings together experts representing diverse populations who are leaders in value assessment\, health equity\, and population health to answer the question\, can we have high-value care without equity? \nSpeakers include: \n\nOrriel Richardson\, JD\, MPH\, Vice President of Health Equity & Policy\, Morgan Health\nMarshall Chin\, MD\, MPH\, University of Chicago\nCesar Herrera\, MPH\, MBA\, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder\, Yuvo Health\nDennis Heaphy\, MPH\, MEd\, MDiv\, Health Justice Advocate\, Policy Analyst & Researcher\, Massachusetts Disability Policy Consortium\n\nModerators include: \n\nCourtney Tyne\, Executive Vice President\, Reservoir Communications Group\nMichelle Nealy\, Vice President\, Reservoir Communications Group\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER
