SUMMARY:Innovative Approaches to Improve Maternal Health Hybrid Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, pregnancy-related deaths and complications\, or maternal mortality and morbidity (MMM) rates\, are among the highest in the developed world. For Black women and American Indian/Alaska Native women\, they are especially high\, regardless of their income or education levels. Collaboration among researchers\, small businesses\, and the community could lead to new ways to improve maternal health and reduce U.S. MMM rates. An earlier NIH workshop on Jan. 18\, 2022\, Technology to Improve Maternal Health\, identified MMM technology gaps and areas of need. \nOn Monday\, May 8\, and Tuesday\, May 9\, 2023\, from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. each day\, NIH will hold a hybrid event that brings together technology developers\, medical device experts\, small business innovators\, implementation scientists\, MMM researchers\, and academic\, industry\, and community-based partners. The goal is to connect the research community with small businesses that are developing new approaches to improve MMM and its associated health disparities. Hosted by the NHLBI and sponsored by NIH’s (IMPROVE) Initiative along with six other NIH institutes and offices\, the workshop will be held in the Main Auditorium of the Natcher Conference Center in Building 45 on the NIH campus and will be videocast. \nPanel session experts will focus on the best ways to move new maternal health technology into the community\, how to address health disparities faced by pregnant people\, and improve access to diagnostic and treatment tools. Topics include technology\, clinical implications\, community engagement\, implementation\, regulatory considerations\, government funding\, payors and investors\, and more. Small businesses can apply to “pitch” their innovative solutions and receive feedback from experts in the field. Other highlights include a poster session on clinical research and interactive discussions designed to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration. The event is free and open to the public. \nObjectives \nDuring the workshop\, participants will: \n\nExplore key scientific discoveries in diagnosis and treatment of pregnancy-associated conditions and the areas ready for translation.\nParticipate in how-to training sessions focused on best practices in translation\, education\, funding\, technology development\, and dissemination.\nReview implementation science and community-engaged methods to ensure maternal health technologies reach those most affected and address health equity.\n\nSponsors \n\nNIH IMPROVE Initiative\nNational Heart\, Lung\, and Blood Institute (NHLBI)\nNational Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD)\nNational Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)\nNational Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH)\nNational Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB)\nOffice of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH)\n\nThis is a hybrid workshop: When registering\, please choose one ticket type (either hybrid or virtual) \nIn-person: Natcher Conference Center\, NIH campus\, Bethesda\, MD (please register before April 25\, 2023) \nVirtual: ZoomGov and NIH videocast; to watch the event live via NIH videocast\, please click on the link below: (please register before May 5\, 2023) \n\nMay 8: https://videocast.nih.gov/watch=49193\nMay 9: https://videocast.nih.gov/watch=49196\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Hot Topics from Biology of Sex Differences Session
DESCRIPTION:Hot Topics from Biology of Sex Differences Session on May 10 at 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM MT is part of the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (OSSD) Annual Meeting in May 2023. Learn more about the OSSD Annual Meeting here. \nThe session will be moderated by Jill Becker\, University of Michigan\, Professor of Psychology\, Research Professor Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute. \nSWHR will present on its Biology of Sex Differences article\, “The roles of sex and gender in women’s eye health disparities in the United States\,” led by Irene O. Aninye\, Society for Women’s Health Research\, Chief Science Officer \nAbout the Article: Irene O. Aninye 1\, Kathleen Digre 2\, M. Elizabeth Hartnett 2\, Kira Baldonado 3\, Erin M. Shriver 4\, Laura M. Periman 5\, Julie Grutzmacher 3\, Janine A. Clayton 6\, and Society for Women’s Health Research Women’s Eye Health Working Group 11 Society for Women’s Health Research\, 2 Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences\, University of Utah\, 3 Prevent Blindness\, Chicago\, IL\, 4 Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences\, University of Iowa\, 5 Periman Eye Institute\, Seattle\, WA\, 6 \n\nOffice of Research on Women’s Health\, National Institute of HealthIn the United States\, women are at a higher risk of developing vision impairment or a serious eye disease (such as age-related macular degeneration\, thyroid eye disease\, or glaucoma) than men. Biological sex and social determinants of health contribute to eye health disparities and inequities for women that are clinically under-addressed\, resulting in undue burden on the healthcare ecosystem. Many causes of vision impairment are preventable or treatable\, yet eye health is not prioritized in research\, policy\, or public health measures to ensure optimal outcomes. Based on an assessment of the state of science regarding sex and gender differences in women’s eye health across the lifespan\, the Society for Women’s Health Research Women’s Eye Health Working Group identified priority areas in research\, clinical care\, and education to reduce disparities and improve patient care in women’s eye health. Consensus recommendations of the working group included using a systems approach that (1) incorporates a sex and gender lens to guide a comprehensive framework for future research; (2) increases health care provider and public education; and (3) expands inter-sector partnerships among ophthalmologic providers\, researchers\, and non-vision stakeholders. Funding: Programmatic sponsorship from Horizon Pharmaceuticals. Read the article here.\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Women and Cancer: 30 Years of the NIH Revitalization Act
DESCRIPTION:June 2023 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Congressional Act of 1993\, that established guidelines for the inclusion of women and minorities in all NIH-funded research. WHAM is excited to recognize the anniversary of this historic Act by hosting a series of virtual (and in-person) events throughout the year\, exploring what’s changed\, what hasn’t\, and what needs to change in the future.\n\nDespite some advances in our understanding of certain areas of women and cancer in the last 30 years\, the field still remains understudied and underfunded. Some of the cancers that affect women most often include breast\, colorectal\, endometrial\, lung\, cervical\, skin and ovarian cancers. Lung cancer is the #1 cause of cancer deaths in women\, more than breast\, ovarian\, and cervical cancers combined\, and breast\, lung and colorectal cancer will account for an estimated 50% of all new cancer diagnoses in women.\n\nThis WHAM Dialogue will discuss where do we stand today with one of the leading causes of death worldwide\, and the direction we need to take to create change.\n\nJoin us for this roundtable dialogue\, featuring:\n\nYolonda Colson\, MD\, PhD\, Chief for the Division of Thoracic Surgery\, Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Surgery\, Harvard Medical School\nClaudia Henschke\, MD\, PhD\, Professor of Radiology\, and Head\, Lung and Cardiac Screening at Mount Sinai Medical Center\nNicole LeBoeuf\, MD\, MPH\, Vice Chair of the Department of Dermatology\, Division Chief of Oncodermatology and Director of the Center for Cutaneous Oncology\, Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center; Director of The Program in Skin Toxicities from Anticancer Therapies\, Director of Cutaneous Oncology Fellowship Program\, and Co-Director of the Complex Medical Dermatology Fellowship Program\, Brigham and Women’s Hospital; and Associate Professor\, Harvard Medical School\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:#SWHRtalksHPV: Vaccination for Cancer Prevention
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nIn the United States\, 85% of people will get a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection within their lifetime. While many HPV infections will clear naturally and without issue\, persistent infections caused by certain types of HPV can lead to serious diseases such as genital warts and cancer – including cervical\, vaginal\, vulvar\, penile\, anal\, and oropharyngeal (throat) cancers. \nThe HPV vaccine is highly effective in preventing many of these cancers and reducing the overall spread of the virus. However\, vaccination rates at the recommended times in childhood and adolescence need improvement. The Society for Women’s Health Research created the #SWHRtalksHPV Video Series and other educational resources to help health care providers\, parents\, guardians\, and their communities engage in productive conversations about the HPV vaccine. Recognizing that women are often the primary medical decision-makers for their families\, it is important that they have science-based information that is accessible and easy to understand so they can make the best and most informed decisions about HPV vaccination for themselves and their loved ones. \nSWHR hosted a virtual public forum to share educational information about the HPV vaccine and highlight diverse perspectives on the value of the HPV vaccine in cancer prevention. \n  \nThis public forum is part of SWHR’s Vaccines Program. It builds on SWHR’s HPV Vaccine Education Roundtable held in November 2022 that focused discussion on how to eliminate barriers to HPV vaccine confidence\, access\, and uptake.

SUMMARY:Tackling Depression / Anxiety During Midlife & The Menopause Transition: It's Not All in Your Head
DESCRIPTION:Irritable? Little or no motivation? Unable to experience joy? Increased anxiety? Not feeling like yourself? Women are far likelier to experience depression and anxiety during the years leading up to and immediately after menopause. But few people\, even doctors\, understand this. \nIn honor of Mental Health Awareness Month\, the speaker for our May Menopause Talk is Dr. Claudio Soares\, Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Queen’s University in Canada and one of the foremost experts on mood and menopause. Dr. Susan Goldstein\, a family physician\, professor at the University of Toronto\, and Board member of the Canadian Menopause Society\, also will be joining and interviewing Dr. Soares. \nDrs. Soares and Goldstein will discuss why women are at greater risk for mental health challenges\, including depression and anxiety\, during the menopause transition. And they will walk through the questions to ask to identify the most valid treatment option(s): are you pre- or post-menopausal? How severe are your mood symptoms? What about other menopause symptoms\, like hot flashes and sleep issues? Have you had prior mood problems? What treatment(s) helped you? Whether your mood is not what it used to be\, or you are suffering far more than that\, you will not want to miss this discussion. \n\nREGISTER
