SUMMARY:Menopause Stories From Black Women and the Doctors Who Listen to Them
DESCRIPTION:Did you know Black women enter menopause earlier and have longer lasting\, more intense menopause symptoms? More hot flashes and night sweats (lasting up to 7-10 years)\, worse sleep\, more clinical depression\, increased hypertension—all with a greater impact on their lives. \nUnfortunately\, your doctor may not know these facts either. Black women are the least likely to leave their doctor’s office with a prescription for hormone therapy or another effective treatment. \nWhat will it take for doctors\, researchers\, the media—indeed\, all of us—to take seriously the menopause and midlife health care needs of Black women? \nHost Dr. Sharon Malone\, and panelists Rachel Hughes\, Dr. Sameena Rahman\, and Kamili Wilson\, can offer some answers. Wearing their hats as doctors\, menopause educators/advocates\, and women seeking answers themselves\, they will discuss their journeys to receiving the menopause care they needed\, and how they are paying it forward to other Black women in midlife and beyond. \n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Defend Together: A Conversation about Flu Vaccines and Pregnancy
DESCRIPTION:According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\, the burden of influenza (flu) in the United States is significant – leading to 26 million illnesses\, 290\,000 hospitalizations\, and up to 19\,000 deaths during the last flu season. Getting the flu during pregnancy increases the risk of developing serious illness\, pregnancy complications\, and hospitalization. Even at optimum health\, changes in the body during pregnancy can increase the risk for severe illness in people who get the flu. \nA survey of the 2021-2022 flu season found a decrease in vaccine coverage in pregnant women by 54% from the previous season. Vaccine hesitancy is contributing factor\, with pregnant people reporting concerns about the safety risks of flu and other vaccines to the baby. \nThe Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) hosted an Instagram Live event with a Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) expert to share educational information and discuss the benefits of the flu vaccine for women and their families\, with a focus on pregnant populations. \n  \n\nFollow the conversation on Twitter at @SWHR and #SWHRtalksVaccines. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Clearing the Air About Lung Cancer in Women
DESCRIPTION:Diagnostic tests and procedures offer opportunities to detect diseases\, monitor disease progression\, guide treatments\, and evaluate treatment effectiveness. Some diagnostic tests are invasive\, such as a biopsy or endoscopy; whereas others are noninvasive\, such as x-rays and ultrasound imaging procedures. \nInnovations in diagnostics provide access to health information\, helping women make informed decisions about their health care at every stage of their lives. Screening and diagnostic testing can lead to earlier detection of disease\, improve health outcomes\, and contribute toward reducing health disparities among women. Research seeking to expand the development and availability of diagnostic tools for conditions that exclusively\, differently\, or disproportionately affect women is invaluable in furthering women’s health across sectors. \nThe Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) hosted a series of public forums to share educational information about the importance and value of innovative diagnostics throughout the lifespan and across disease states and conditions. The events discusses how to improve health outcomes for diseases and conditions that disproportionately or differently affect women\, with special a focus on cancer and healthy aging. \n  \nThe 2023 SWHR Value of Diagnostics within Women’s Health series includes: \n\nTaking it to Heart: Addressing Cardiovascular Disease in Women (February\, 13\, 2023)\nPutting our Heads Together: Diagnostic Innovations for Alzheimer’s Disease (June 6\, 2023)\nClearing the Air About Lung Cancer in Women (November 17\, 2023)\n\n  \nFollow the conversation on Twitter at @SWHR and #SWHRtalksDiagnostics. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Sex As a Biological Variable (SABV) Policy and Sex-Inclusive Research: Making Progress\, Taking Stock\, and Visioning the Future
DESCRIPTION:This Webinar is a special meeting of the NIH Sex and Gender in Health and Disease (SGHD) Scientific Interest Group (SIG) sponsored by the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health. The SGHD SIG aims to explore the influences of sex (as a biological variable) and gender (as a social construct) on health and disease across the lifespan. The SIG aims to promote the dissemination of research and foster potential interdisciplinary collaborations among NIH scientists who work on or are interested in\, aspects of sex-based research across the research continuum or sex-differences research relevant to health and disease. The SIG also serves as a platform for cross-disciplinary connections. \nOur distinguished speakers Drs. Natasha A. Karp\, Shirin Heidari\, and Barbara Stranger will highlight progress and discuss challenges across three important domains of sex as a biological variable: (1) Importance of rigorous experimental design in biomedical research\, (2) Transparent and inclusive scientific reporting\, and (3) Sex-inclusive approaches as fundamental to advancing biomedical research. A discussion of the biomedical\, social\, and ethical complexities of sex-inclusive research will follow the presentations. \nRegistration is required to join the webinar. \nREGISTER
