SUMMARY:Exploring the Changing Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Legislation and Policy Landscape and Its Impact on Health and Public Health’s Workforce\, Education\, Training\, and Research: A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Following the June 2023 Supreme Court ruling against affirmative action in colleges and universities\, many states introduced legislation in higher education to disband DEI efforts. As of August 2024\, 86 bills in 28 states have introduced DEI legislation for colleges and universities to disband diversity offices or staff\, ban mandatory diversity training\, prohibit institutions to use diversity statements in hiring and promotion\, or bar colleges for considering race\, sex\, ethnicity\, or national origin in admissions or employment. \nThe National Academies Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity will host a public hybrid workshop on October 9\, 2024\, from 9-4:30 p.m. ET at the National Academies of Sciences in Washington\, DC to explore the impact of DEI legislation and policies on achieving a diverse health care and public health workforce. Speakers will explore recent changes in state legislature and policies affecting the health care and public health workforce; examine the impact of these policy changes on medical and public health training\, curriculum\, and health research; discuss student recruitment and faculty recruitment and retention for educating and training the health and public health’s workforce; and investigate potential solutions for mitigating adverse impacts of policy changes. \nLearn More

SUMMARY:Give to Women and Girls Day
DESCRIPTION:Since 2019\, the Women’s Philanthropy Institute has measured giving to women and girls through its Women & Girls Index (WGI)\, thanks to funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. While nearly 50\,000 U.S. organizations are dedicated to women and girls\, the WGI consistently shows that less than 2% of all philanthropic support goes to these organizations. To respond to this lack of funding\, the Women’s Philanthropy Institute launched Give to Women and Girls Day\, a national awareness campaign to increase funding for women’s and girls’ organizations. \nThis year\, the Women’s Philanthropy Institute is partnering with Amplify Her® Foundation to host a Give to Women and Girls Day celebration at New-York Historical Society\, to call attention to the gap in philanthropic support for women and girls — using this moment to galvanize awareness and funding. \nLearn More

SUMMARY:Supporting Equitable Access to Respiratory Vaccines
DESCRIPTION:Risk-based vaccine recommendations are an important mechanism by which public health authorities provide guidance\, encourage vaccination\, and reach vulnerable populations. That said\, implementation of risk-based recommendations can prove challenging. \nAs we navigate this year’s respiratory illness season\, Champions for Vaccine Education\, Equity and Progress (CVEEP) invites you to join a discussion focused on best practices to support equitable access to respiratory vaccines\, which will include an overview of CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations for respiratory vaccines\, and considerations specific to risk-based recommendations. Featuring insights from leading public health experts\, clinicians\, and government officials\, the event will explore what is working\, where there might be barriers to implementation and gaps in communication and\, how the public health community can work together to ensure all individuals are able to receive the vaccines they need. \nPanelists include: \n\nKaryne Jones\, President and CEO of the National Caucus and Center on Black Aging and convening member of CVEEP\nDr. Reed Tuckson\, Co-Founder of the Black Coalition Against COVID and Co-Founder of the Coalition For Trust in Health & Science\nDr. Evelyn Twentyman\, Senior Advisor for Vaccine Strategy\, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases\, CDC\n\nThe discussion will be moderated by Amy Pisani\, CEO of Vaccinate Your Family. \nLearn More

SUMMARY:The Overlapping Impact of Pelvic Pain & GI Disorders in Endometriosis
DESCRIPTION:Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological disease that affects more than 200 million women worldwide. When endometrial tissue grows outside of the uterus\, lesions can form on other organs throughout the body and cause severe pelvic and back pain\, as well as pain between periods and with intercourse\, heavy menstrual bleeding\, and infertility. In fact\, 1 in 10 women have endometriosis and 30-50% of individuals with endometriosis experience infertility. \nAlthough endometriosis can begin in adolescence\, it often goes undiagnosed and inadequately treated for an average of 6.7 years or longer. Endometriosis is associated with a high burden of comorbidities\, increased use of health care resources\, and excessive costs\, particularly for younger patients whose health care needs may differ widely from the older population. \nIn fact\, it is common for several endometriosis symptoms to overlap with bulk symptoms and gastrointestinal disorders\, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and Crohn’s disease\, resulting in misdiagnoses and complications managing symptoms. \nSWHR hosted a webinar to review the impact of endometriosis on women’s health and highlight the diagnosis\, treatment\, and co-management of gut-related comorbidities\, with a special emphasis on adolescent and young women living with endometriosis.
