SWHR President and CEO Kathryn Schubert, MPP, released the following statement in support of the Uterine Fibroids Research and Education Act:
“Even as millions of American women suffer from debilitating fibroids, public awareness and research funding for this disease remains startlingly low. SWHR applauds Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) on her introduction of the Uterine Fibroids Research and Education Act, which will expand federal research efforts and bring much needed attention to this overlooked disease.
Greater public awareness of fibroids will spark essential conversations among women, their families, and their health care providers about menstrual conditions, which are often stigmatized and dismissed by society. Increased funding for fibroids research is crucial to discovering better treatment options for women with this disease. We are hopeful that this bill will help prioritize uterine fibroids as a critical women’s health issue.”

Last year, at the age of 45, I found myself at a low point. Every month, I had a period that lasted 10 days, with pain and bleeding so severe that I would be homebound for at least three days, Jennifer writes.
To bring attention to these research and care gaps and help support individuals impacted by uterine health conditions, SWHR has added uterine health to the Women’s Health Equity Initiative campaign this fall.
SWHR joined Representatives Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), and Robin Kelly (D-IL), along with representatives from the Fibroid Foundation and The White Dress Project, on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.
This guest blog by Laura Marrone and Pratik Shukla, MD, assistant professor of radiology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School explores uterine fibroid embolization as a way to treat uterine fibroids.
