Calls to Action
SWHR President & CEO Kathryn G. Schubert and Dr. Margaret McCarthy, professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, published an op-ed in Morning Consult on the inclusion of sex and gender considerations in biomedical research.
Both sex and gender influence our health. These factors are not interchangeable, as they encompass different aspects of health. The 21st Century Cures Act served as a positive catalyst for advancing the study of sex as a biological variable in research. The second iteration of the Cures Act would be an opportunity to build on efforts to promote the consideration of sex and gender in research. Studying sex and gender in research can help explain why some conditions and diseases affect women and men differently.
