Assessing Research Gaps and Unmet Needs in Endometriosis

Although endometriosis affects nearly 10% of reproductive-age women, the disease remains underfunded and under-researched, according to an SWHR expert review in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

On April 10, 2018, SWHR brought together patients, clinicians, and researchers for a roundtable meeting to identify unmet needs and knowledge gaps in endometriosis. The review, published online in February 2019 and in print in August 2019 (Volume 221, Issue 2), summarizes the roundtable’s findings and discussions.

The roundtable participants encouraged continued research into the underlying biology of endometriosis and its possible subtypes to help eliminate the remaining barriers and stigma associated with the condition. Increased funding for new research would allow for the study of less invasive diagnostic methods, higher quality therapies, and more comprehensive care for women with endometriosis.
