Autoimmune Diseases Call to Action

It is estimated that between 23.5 million and 50 million Americans are living with autoimmune diseases and conditions, and the prevalence of these diseases are increasing. Yet, the burden of autoimmune diseases is not evenly distributed; 80 percent of patients diagnosed with autoimmune diseases are women, though gender ratios differ among individual diseases.

As part of the Society for Women’s Health Research’s (SWHR) commitment to raising awareness about the disproportionate impact of autoimmune diseases on women and driving policy change to improve health and quality of life outcomes for women affected by these diseases, SWHR published the policy agenda, Improving Outcomes for Women with Autoimmune Diseases and Conditions: A Call to Action. This agenda is intended to serve as a roadmap outlining key areas of policy need across research, clinical care, awareness and advocacy, coverage and access, and more in order to improve autoimmune-related outcomes.
