SWHR Statement on President’s Budget and Precision Medicine Initiative

Today, President Barack Obama unveiled his budget request to Congress for the 2016 fiscal year, which provides for critical investment in research at our Nation’s premier science agencies. “The Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR®) is encouraged to see that the Administration has prioritized research and development in the 2016 budget, and has requested increases for our federal research agencies,” said Phyllis Greenberger, SWHR’s President and CEO, “particularly at the National Institute of Health (NIH), which, when adjusted for inflation, has seen its budget decline by nearly 25 percent since 2003.”

The Administration is requesting $31.3 Billion for NIH, an increase of approximately 3% over last year and $147 million for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a 6% increase over 2015. “SWHR is committed to ensuring that Congress understands the necessity of providing stable annual funding increases for the NIH, FDA and all of our federal research agencies to meet the needs of the American public. While the President’s budget falls short of the appropriate funding needed by our federal science agencies to assure their ability to remain world leaders in science and medical research, SWHR is committed to working with the Administration and Congress to provide this critical funding.

Additionally, SWHR will advocate for the Precision Medicine Initiative that President Obama announced in his State of the Union Address. SWHR supports this initiative, building a cohort of 1 million American volunteers for genomics and other biomedical research. We look forward to working with the Administration to ensure that women and minorities are actively recruited to this critical cohort, and that the data from this initiative is appropriately captured and analyzed so that medicine can truly be tailored to the individual patient.
