DeLauro NIH Funding Bill Will Provide Critically Needed Investments in Medical Research

Statement from Phyllis Greenberger, President and CEO of the Society for Women’s Health Research

“On behalf of the Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR®) I want to applaud Representative DeLauro (D-CT) for introducing the Accelerating Biomedical Research Act. This bipartisan approach would create a budget cap adjustment to allow for a funding increase for biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The bill would increase the NIH budget by ten percent for the next two years, followed by a five percent increase in each following year through 2021.

The NIH serves as the America’s premier medical research agency and is the largest source of funding for biomedical and behavioral research in the world. “This bill would help provide a much needed sustainable pathway to NIH funding, and go a long way to restoring the cuts that NIH has received due to sequestration and budgetary cuts.”  Proper and consistent Congressional investment in medical research will ultimately save valuable healthcare dollars and ensure that patients receive the best possible treatments and cures.

SWHR believes that a robust federal research agenda that is inclusive of women’s health and sex differences research is critical for the U.S. to meet the needs and expectations of its citizens. “We call on all Members of Congress to support the Accelerating Biomedical Research Act, and make the fight against cancer a national priority.”

SWHR is the thought-leader in research on promoting the study of biological differences in disease and is dedicated to transforming women’s health through science, advocacy, and education.
