There are sex differences observed in the immune system, and these differences can be especially pronounced during periods of significant hormonal change for women, such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.
The Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) published the article Life-course immunology: reframing sex differences in the immune system to better understand women’s health in the Biology of Sex Differences journal, in celebration of Sex Differences Awareness Day on May 12. The article highlights how and why immunology research must reconsider life stage as a core principle of sex differences.
