Rare Autoimmune Disease in Women

Fact Sheets

Published 5/21/26

Autoimmune diseases occur when the body’s immune system mistakenly identifies its own healthy cells as foreign and attacks them. Approximately 15 million people are diagnosed with at least one autoimmune disease, and many of these are classified as rare diseases. Rare diseases are diseases which affect fewer than 200,000 people.

Rare autoimmune diseases are often invisible misunderstood, and delayed in diagnosis, especially for women.

The Society for Women’s Health Research created the “Rare Autoimmune Disease in Women” fact sheet to bring light to certain rare autoimmune diseases that differently or disproportionally impact women.
