Friday, August 8, 2025 – The Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) is excited to announce it will be back at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) Science Summit in September 2025, in partnership with the ECHAlliance – The Global Health Connector, to host a full-day event on women’s health. Titled “Transforming Women’s Health through Science and Sustainable Partnerships,” this year’s event will discuss key developments and opportunities to advance women’s health care, research, and policies; and build on conversations held at SWHR’s UNGA79 event last year.
SWHR is proud to again bring women’s health to a central, global stage. Women experience unique health challenges over the course of their lifespans, due to biological sex, hormones, and sociocultural influences related to gender. Women’s health gaps persist in research investment for conditions that disproportionately affect women, policies to ensure equitable access to health care and resources, and the development of workforces that train and promote representation of women in health care discovery, delivery, and leadership.
While women experience longer life expectancies than men, women often have a shorter health expectancy, equating to more years where their quality of life is reduced due to disease or injury.
“I believe we can close the gender health gap in this lifetime, but it will take focus, funding, and innovative thinking from all of us across the health care ecosystem and across the globe to do this work. We each have a critical role to play to achieve women’s health equity,” says SWHR President and CEO Kathryn Schubert, MPP, CAE.
Topics for this year’s event will include understanding the global burden of disease for women and identifying successful models for translating innovation across borders, promoting workplace equity and support for women, empowering women in community-based care, establishing national priorities and leveraging public-private partnerships to advance women’s health. The panels will build on SWHR’s initiatives and programming across topics like menopause, maternal health, obesity and metabolic health, Alzheimer’s disease, and brain health.
“The annual Science Summit offers a unique opportunity to convene leaders in research, health care, government, and advocacy from around the world who all share a common goal of bettering the health of women and their communities through the Sustainable Development Goals. We are thrilled to be returning this year and working with established partners like ECHAlliance while also looking to build new relationships,” said SWHR Chief Science Officer Irene O. Aninye, PhD.
